Ernest Debs Regional Park is one of my favorite places in Los Angeles, it is such a hidden gem, the rolling green hills, twisty trails, stark trees and hidden bits of views of downtown, make this park one of the best spots to take your family for a leisurely outdoor afternoon.

The Center’s mission is to inspire people to experience, understand and care for the local natural world. The nature-based education and community programs at Debs Park are designed to engage children and their families in the outdoor world, and to give them a personal stake in its protection by making environmental issues relevant to their lives.

Free family programs are held at the center every Saturday afternoon, this weekend we attended the family art studio and created a beautiful artwork on recycled bottles.  The bottle is now the coin jar sitting at our family room.

The Audubon Center at Debs Park opened in 2003 as an environmental education and conservation center for the communities of northeast Los Angeles. The Center is located in the fourth largest park in the city of Los Angeles. More than half of the park is covered in walnut-oak woodland, grassland, and coastal sage scrub, a remnant of the native habitats that once rimmed the Los Angeles Basin. Over 140 species of birds have been recorded here.

Free binoculars are available for everyone to borrow for birds watching.

There is no need for children's play structure when there is a tree like this at the center -- we spent so much time climbing, swinging, walking on the tree branches that we almost missed the sunset.

This hidden trail reminds me of the classic kids animation "Totoro" - doesn't it look like the path that took the little Japanese girl, Mei, to the Totoro nest?
