Movie: Silent Sundays Series: The Kid (1921)

11/19/2017

The Mission Playhouse and Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society present The Kid Sunday afternoon, November 19th at 2:30pm.

Premiering in 1921 at Carnegie Hall, the heartwarming film The Kid features international comedy star Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan. The Kidwas Chaplin’s first full length feature film. Directed, written, and produced by Chaplin, he portrays his famous ‘Tramp’ character who finds an abandoned baby that he raises as his own. The film is “a perfect blend of comedy and drama and is arguably Chaplin’s most personal and autobiographical work” (silentfilm.org). As the opening title card states, it is “a picture with a smile-and perhaps, a tear”.

Accompanying the film on the Playhouse’s 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ is American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year (2012) Mark Herman.

The series continues with  the sci-fi visual masterpiece Metropolis (1927) on January 28th, and The Cameraman (1928) starring Buster Keaton on April 22nd.
