SUMMARY:Junior Journalist Coverage on Miss Chinatown Los Angeles Pageant Press Conference
\n\nhttps://youtu.be/SGjfJgz1Isc\n\n\n\n\n\n \nPhoebe Zhang，Age 9 \nThere is a competition named the Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Pageant\, and this year is the 54th annual competition. On the first press conference meeting\, the participants introduced themselves. Last year’ s winner was Catherine Liang. This year’s contestants are Kathy Wong\, Ashley Thompson\, Barbara Wong\, Sela Wong\, Isabell Liu\, Rubyanne Ye\, Kellie Chin\, Brianna Ying\, Karen Ha. There are sponsors that sponsored the participants like The Commerce\, Cathay Bank\, ExacTax\, KG Bakery\, Alpha Medical Pharmacy Inc\, Tina modeling，and more.\n\nOn January 10th\, I got to interview the boss\, the new president\, and the people that created Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Pageant. We couldn’t interview the participants that were competing for the pageant. I was kind of scared when I first walked into the pageant press conference located in the Ocean Seafood Restaurant. I was also kind of scared talking to the boss. When I talked to him more and more\, I started to get more confidence and comfortable\, instead of scared.\n\nI saw the girls introduce themselves. Before they introduced themselves\, the boss\, the new president\, and other people that created the Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Pageant. They talked about themselves and the boss introduced the new president. They also talked about the pageant competition and the 120th Golden Dragon Parade. After they did that\, they introduce the participants. On January 10th\, there is a press conference for the girls to introduce themselves. The Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Pageant competition is held on January 26th\, 2019.\n\nThe competition is located at the San Gabriel Sheraton Hotel and hosted by the Chamber. At least the Golden Dragon Parade attracts 80k-100k people watching the parade. When we had the press conference\, the boss said that he got good news. He said that one of the floats from the Rose Parade is going to join the Golden Dragon Parade. It was so great to know the girls\, boss\, new president\, and other people that created the Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Pageant Competition. It was sad that we couldn’t interview the girls. I wish that someday I will be one of the Pageants\, and that I could participate in the pageant competition.

SUMMARY:Rose Parade 2019 ~ a Junior Journalist Coverage
. .\n\nJunior Journalists: Phoebe Zhang\, Sophia Chou\, Emily Priestly\n\nDirector/Editor: Justin Zhang\n\n\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/3VqdWXYIBIc[/embed]\nPhoebe Zhang \, Age 9\nThere is a popular parade when new year comes in Pasadena named " Rose Parade". This year is the 130th tournament of Roses Parade. In the parade\, there are 40 entries and 3 tournament of Roses entries. The rose parade at least made the 120th float last year. The parade became so popular for New Years that\, people had to go there a night before the parade. They had to sleep on the exact same spot as the spot that you are going to be when you are watching the parade. Some people will do that to get a good view of the floats\, bands\, and horses. They will also do that because they want to get a good seat.\n\nThis year\, the Phoenix Decorating Company is gonna build a new float called the Royal Court float. The Fiesta Parade Floats had made the Royal Court float for many years for the rose parade. The floats that are in the rose parade represents the holiday "New Years". There are different shapes\, sizes and different colors of floats. The rose parade featured at least 44 floats\, 20 equestrian units with 400 horses\, and 21 bands. There are some people after the horses that wears a white shirt and pants that clean up the horse poop\, in case if the band p it\, the rose parade will be a disaster and no one wants to step on it.\n\nWhen New Year come by\, over 700\,000 people from all over the world\, travels to Los Angeles just to see the Rose Parade\, and the other millions of people watch from all over the world. They watch it from television is because the television is covered by several television networks. The sinpoli's floats have won awards like in 2015\, they won the Extraordinary Award\, in 2016 they won the Sweepstakes Award\, in 2017 they won the Fantasy Award and finally in 2018 they won the Sweepstakes Award again.\n\n  \n\nIn 2018\, the floats are mostly based on the legend of Dragon gate. The legend is about a fish that struggles to jump over the Dragon gate to become a fantastic Dragon. Singpoli and Paradiso teamed up with Interactivism. The golden gate float is pretty big and it had multiple of decorated and has eight waterfalls and more. In 2019\, the theme is "THE MELODY OF LIFE". "THE MELODY OF LIFE" celebrates music which is the universal language. Music brings us back together and also take us back to memories. Music heals us\, defines us\, reminds us\, and inspired us to be our own selves. A singer\, philanthropist named " Chaka Khan " is gonna ride in the 130th Rose Parade presented by Honda and Chaka will also join in the celebration of the 105th Rose Bowl Game.\n\nThis year\, there is a float called Rythms of Taiwan. Rhythms of Taiwan is basically the main float for this year's parade. On the float\, there are many and many of dancers on the float. There are also some drums that people are playing on. The dancers wear on makeup that Taiwan people wear when they are performing. There is also a giant moving figure on the top of the float that is holding a drum and some drumsticks. There are a lot of that are decorated on the float.\n\n\n\nI was so amazed after I watched the rose parade. I saw a lot of marching bands\, horses\, and floats. My favorite float was the “Rhythms of Taiwan” because that float represented my culture and they were wearing face paints. There was also a giant moving figure that was also playing the drums. It has so many dancers and a lot of people that was playing the drums. I also liked the “Royal Court Float”. The bad thing for today was that it was so cold\, I couldn’t even really talk and I was shivering while watching the parade. The good thing was that my friends and I had fun and we saw so many great floats there. I liked how the people that was picking up the horse was so happy and I also really liked the music representing the theme during the parade. I don’t know why the people that is picking up the horse is so happy to pick it. I was kind of sad that I didn’t get to go overnight with my friends because we get to throw tortillas or anything at cars. It was so fun to watch floats\, horses\, bands\, and people come by. I sure want to go to the Rose Parade next year and the year after and so on.\nEmily Priestly，Age 11\nThe rose parade was a fun\, amazing experience. 2019 was my first rose parade and I was amazed\, there were a bunch of horses and some horses even had sparkly hooves\, there were a lot of marching bands\, and the floats were just amazing. The parade went on for two hours\, it was really exciting and I loved how people just came up to you and hi5 and I also love how the people behind the horse picking up horse poop were so happy and they were also waving at us while screaming happy new year\, my favorite part would have to be everything it was all amazing. I would totally go to the rose parade again next year.\n\n

SUMMARY:Junior Journalists Team Interview + Volunteered at China Airlines Rose Parade Float
DESCRIPTION: \n\nHere is a sneak peak of the 2019 Annual Rose Parade that will be taking place on January 1st\, 2019!\n\n一月一日就是玫瑰花車遊行的大日子，小記者 Aaron\, Karen\, Ryan and Kyran 來到華航花車籌備現場當義工，和幾百位義工ㄧ起進行最後的鮮花裝飾工作，評審時間快到了，不知道今年的大獎將會花落誰家？ The Melody of Life – celebrates music\, the universal language \n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/B-zajh1XQbM[/embed]\n\n\n\n \n\nChina Airlines’ Rose Parade Float Experience\nAaron Estrada\, age 13\nUpon arrival on this cold morning\, on Saturday\, December 28th\, I volunteered to help decorate China Airlines’ float\, “Rhythms of Taiwan”\, before 2018 comes to a close. I checked in around 8:30 with a line of other volunteers. This is my first year volunteering for the Rose Parade floats. Two years ago\, I attended a press conference to cover BDK Singpoli’s Rose Parade float entry\, “The Monkey King: Journey to Success” which won the Fantasy Trophy Award for most outstanding display of fantasy and imagination. This year’s Rose Parade will mark the 130th year for this event. There are 40 sponsored entries and 3 Tournament of Roses entries in 2019’s Rose Parade. This year’s Rose Parade theme\, “Melody of Life”\, celebrates music as a universal language. It gives people a chance to see the different cultures and meanings in their floats. \nAs we pass through the front gate\, I see a rainbow of flowers in buckets\, on the ground\, in racks\, on tables\, at every turn. I see a lot of people working on different tasks scattered around inside and outside the warehouse where the floats were located. There were at least ten different floats inside warehouses at this location. There are thousand and thousands of roses and even onions here. My day there volunteering was a seven hour process including cutting\, putting glue on flowers\, delivering boxes to other volunteers\, viewing of floats at the Rose Pavillion\,  previewing of the China Airlines’ float performance\, and conducting the interviews. I interviewed the volunteers and a dancer from the STC group. I also worked alongside with my other Lajajakids junior journalists friends to help out. We took breaks after in between volunteering then went straight back to work. For my first 2 hours I was cutting flowers. At about 11 am\, we were gathered around the float to enjoy the preview of China Airlines’ float performance. All of the interviews I did were from China Airlines\, but I also did a quick introduction to 24 Hour Fitness’ float. Each person can give a background experience of what is going on with them and what is happening. \nChina Airlines has participated in the Rose Parade every year since 1987. With this 2019 Rose Parade entry\, China Airlines will celebrate its’ 33rd year participating in Rose Parade festivities. They have once again partnered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Bureau. China Airlines’ float was the winner of the “International Trophy for the Most Beautiful Entry Outside of the the US” in last year’s 2018 Rose Parade. The float builder who created last year’s winning float was AES and their entry this year is through AES again.  AES has seven entries in the 2019 Rose Parade with five of those as sponsored floats. Their company has been creating floats for over 30 years. The designer of this year’s float is John Ramirez.\nChina Airlines float will have dancers dressed into traditional costumes with modern touches such as oversized gloves and sunglasses. The large dancer is covered in orange lentils\, statice blooms\, carnation petals\, lots of mums\, seaweed\, spices and thousands of orchid blooms. We saw a glimpse of the performance and it is seven minutes long. They will perform the dance about 35 times through the length of the parade\, which is an exhausting performance. They have practiced for this and have put in hard work into it with STC. Based on their website\, “the STC Foundation was established by STC Management in 2012\, for the purposes of introduction\, promotion and appreciation of the Asian culture and its arts.” STC members and China Airlines’ Marketing Director for the Americas were present. The float performers are mostly 2nd generation immigrants who grew up in Los Angeles. On the float\, were 3 giant prince which had colorful faces. They were alongside the other 10 dancers. The choreographer was born in Taiwan and was a professional dancer at Disneyland and performed the role of Mulan. She hopes it will be liked by the audience as beautiful Taiwanese art. There were beatings of drums while other performers danced. They used 40 kinds of natural flowers and grains of Taiwanese culture. There were about more than 500 volunteers who have helped to work on the float. The flowers had a very nice scent to them\, and everyone was hard at work. You got to see the other floats and it was a great feeling.\nThe 130th Tournament of Roses Parade will start at 8 a.m. on Colorado Boulevard between Orange Grove and Sierra Madre for those who wish to see the live parade. There will also be television coverage for those who will be watching it is on screen KTLA\, ABC\, Hallmark Channel\, NBC\, RFD-TV\, Univision and internationally. My family watched the live feed on Facebook last year.\nThere will also be an opportunity to view floats following the Rose Parade on January 1 and January 2\, 2019. Floats will be parked along East Sierra Madre and East Washington boulevards in Pasadena\, CA.  Advance tickets can be purchased through Sharp Seating Company. General admission tickets are $15 per person (free for children 5 and under). Ticket sales end 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm daily. The schedule is listed on the tournamentofroses.com as follows:\nJanuary 1\, 2019 from 1:00 - 5:00 pm (last entry at 4:00 pm) and\nJanuary 2\, 2019 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 pm; senior citizens and disabled visitors welcome early from 7:00 - 9:00 am)\nHappy New Year everyone!!\n\n\nVolunteering at Rose Parade Float Decoration\nKaren Shi\, age 13\n2018 is coming to an end very soon\, and Pasadena’s annual Rose Parade is a great way to kick off 2019. Hundreds of thousands of people are looking forward to this event each year\, many flying in from all over the world to witness the beautiful floats\, marching bands\, and horses crusade down the long road in person. Speaking of flying\, one of the floats participating in 2019’s Rose Parade is from China Airlines. Embracing the parade theme of “The Melody of Life\,” the airline’s magnificent float\, “Rhythms of Taiwan\,” captures the spirit of Taiwan through lively traditional dance performances and a booming drum line. In addition to the regular flowers used in the parade floats\, this particular float features a variety of colored grains from Taiwan all over the structure\, which encourages people to eat healthily and comfortably this year. Other floats in the storage room I was at included Universal Pictures and Dreamworks Animation’s float “How to Train Your Dragon” and\nBesides learning about the beautiful float from China Airlines\, I also had a memorable experience helping in the process of adding flowers to the float by doing some volunteer work. When we arrived early in the morning at Rosemont Pavilion\, we were led to a table covered in pink and purple flowers with long stems that were had to cut. The petals were small and we had to cut off all of the petals with none of the green stem attached to them\, which is much harder than it sounds. The flowers were prickly and the job was difficult\, but we came out with buckets full of pink blossoms\, and they looked very pretty. I wasn’t able to participate in gluing the flowers onto the actual float\, but I was able to help out in cutting more flowers. After noon\, bouquets of bright yellow chrysanthemums were brought in\, and our next task as volunteers was the separate the bloomed flowers from their stems and apply glue to them\, so they could be taken to the float to be glued on by other volunteers. It was a fun process\, and seeing everybody work together was a great experience.\nVolunteering is open to everyone who is willing to help out\, so if you missed your chance this year\, next year is another opportunity to consider being a part of the float production process. Let’s begin 2019 together on a lively note by going to the Rose Parade!

Her fly in sky made everyone thrilled! Fearless Belle befriends the enchanted castle staff and uncovers the Beast’s gentleness. Her bravery and kindness made everyone feel so warm in winter chill! With help from her friends\, Cinderella is determined to make her wish come true. \n Along with Mickey and friends\, we watched those 5 fantastic Disney’s movies on ICE and help us discover our inner hero as they present “Dare To Dream”! SUMMARY:Making Delicious Christmas Cookies is Easy as 1-2-3
\n\nhttp://www.wellnessbywiny.com/winys-kitchen/

The Queen Mary\, 1126 Queens Highway Long Beach\, CA 90802\n\n門票：成人 $22 \, 兒童 (11歲以下) $16\n\n官網：https://www.queenmary.com/calendar-of-events/qmchristmas/home/\n\n11 月 23 日這晚，一棵八十呎高的、超過 45\,000 顆 LED 燈點亮的聖誕樹在瑪麗皇后號正式點亮，代表著 Queen Mary Christmas 正式開幕。 Ghost of Christmas Passed: A Theatrical Seance，讓觀眾在全新的 Revenant Room 劇院體驗一場互動式的難忘演出。 \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nQueen Mary Christmas: Where the Holidays Set Sail!\nBy: Amber Lin\n\nOn Nov. 27th\, in the afternoon\, I rushed out of school\, jumped in my parents’ car\, and we vroomed off. I was particularly for this because I couldn’t wait to get to Queen Mary Christmas Media & VIP Night to experience “Queen Mary Christmas”! As a news reporter of La JaJa Kids\, this is my first time to cover the first-hand information about the annual Queen Mary event. Actually\, I was in the most-visited Chill in 2018. Thus\, I was expecting how exciting change it’d be to make Queen Mary Christmas onboard!\n\nThis year Queen Mary decides to make fans and tourists step aboard the legendary ocean liner for an all-new holiday adventure. This event takes place from November 23\, 2018 to January 6th\, 2019\, so being able to cover this holiday perk for a limited time is spectacular!\n\nThe Media & VIP Night started from the red carpet which I was so excited to interview the celebrities so close. The attendants are actors from Disney Channel\, movies and TV programs. They’re all looking forward to the Christmas tree lighting and Ice-Skating. After a couple of snapshots and interviews\, I flew up to Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the mast of the ship.\n\nIf you’ve never got onboard Queen Mary\, you definitely need a map to help you find the activities in this huge ship. When we were walking\, the lovely voice already was transmitted in the air. They’re carolers in the traditional costume\, singing for the crowd.\n\nOn the Ship Bow’s ceremony\, the captain and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus were welcoming us. Then Christmas Tree burst into the different colors of Christmas. It was as if an artist came and spilled her color changing paints. The previous carolers also joined with some new carolers and started ramming all the lively Christmas music.\n\nThe carolers’ happy songs with the breathtaking view of Long Beach made the evening a perfect moment. The lights twinkling from the faraway buildings reflected in the still\, dark water\, looking like a star constellation.\n\nSome other things I checked out were the Stocking Shop\, the Gingerbread Village\, the Holiday Promenade\, and the Polar Express 4D. Lollipops and gingerbread popped up all over the place in the Gingerbread Village\, and the Holiday Promenade’s lights created a wave like illusion. The Polar Express 4D captured my heart. As much as the other things in this event amazed me\, the Polar Express 4D transformed into the cherry on top of my sundae! This featured the shorter version of the  movie\, the Polar Express\, but with a pair of fresh\, new eyes. Queen Mary’s Theater definitely has improved technology because there were effects for not just fake snow\, wind shaking seats\, and water\, but also smell! The smell during the movie appeared when the chefs and waiters served children on the Polar Express hot chocolate. I had to admit\, the smell of chocolate watered my mouth so even I wanted to savor it! The last stop we visited is Ice Skating on Sports Deck. We enjoyed watching young people skate on the deck\, showing their happiness and thrilling feeling on the ice!\n\nWhen our trip ended around the ship\, I collapsed onto our car with a tired grin on my face. It was already 8:00pm. Yes\, that was tiring\, but everything I experienced made the trip worth it! This is one of the most anticipated tours for the all families in Southern California to celebrate Christmas! You definitely need to check out our FB to find out more information!\n\n瑪麗皇后號的歷史故事\n\n瑪麗皇后號於1936至1967年間穿梭於大西洋，是當時世界上最大嘴豪華的郵輪之一，名氣甚至比鐵達尼號還大。

\n\n小記者遊記 ~~ by Carissa Yu\, age 11\n\nHave you ever thought about seeing dinosaurs\, killer whales\, giraffes\, and camels close up and life-sized?  Well\, I just did! Ryan and I went to the first ever Chinese Lantern Festival at Fairplex Pomona as Junior Journalists for La JaJa Kids.  We were able to see over 1\,000 different handmade paper lantern animals that glowed in the dark. It was a blast!\n\nChinese paper lantern making is an important ancient form of art started over 2000 years ago. The Chinese stretched paper over a frame-shaped into something\, like an animal\, then dyed with color.  For the final touch\, a candle or is put inside (now we use LED lights). Pretty cool\, right? Imagine a place full of those lanterns.\n\nWhen we first arrived\, we were greeted by a large intricate arch with a proud looking tiger on top and the words “The Wild”. They were all paper lanterns. Right after that\, we passed between two rows of paper lanterns dolphins and fish flying in the tree above. It was the first few minutes and I was already awestruck\, so I couldn’t wait for the upcoming surprises. To the left of the dolphins and flying fish\, a herd of enormous elephants waived their trunks to us as we passed by.\n\nWe strolled past butterflies\, ladybugs\, and all other sorts of insects until we saw the display and my jaws dropped to my knees. It was so magnificent and beautiful.  Different colored bright coral encircled jellyfish that almost reached the trees. To add to the undersea vibes\, the paper lanterns were put in the middle of a lake! I saw a colony of penguins and squealed in delight\, penguins are my favorite animals!  I ran further hoping to see more of these amazing lanterns when I went face to face with a cheetah! There were actually a lot of them\, along with zebras\, giraffes\, hippos\, rhinos\, and more! It was like a safari with all the animals in life-like postures.\n\nWe headed back just in time for the Kung Fu performance.  I noticed that the stage backdrop was also a huge paper lantern!  The Kung Fu performers kicked\, flipped and sliced with their weapons across the stage.  Behind us was a jumper for the younger ones and giant inflatable balls which you could go inside of.\n\nAt the other side of the festival\, a large crowd watched a man as he twisted and sculpted dough into dragons\, birds\, and even Hello Kitty and Mickey Mouse onto a stick.  Besides these unique figurines\, Chinese art\, double-sided embroidery fans\, and other handmade crafts attracted attention to the booth. Ahead of us was another large group of people gathering to watch a Chinese shadow puppet master\, making the crane come alive behind the silk screen.\n\nWe were almost to the end when we went back in time.  We didn’t\, but it seemed like it anyways. Paper lantern dinosaurs roamed the place and one T-rex even bent low and opened his mouth for you to take a selfie!  That’s not the end\, there are giant dinosaurs offering young kids a ride and the parents a picture opportunity. But sadly\, this was the end of our adventure. Right before we left\, we saw a building disguised as a Chinese food takeout container where you can purchase food for dinner.  We said goodbye to the white Indian elephants at the exit and left satisfied with this wonderful experience.\n\nYou too can experience the magical Chinese lanterns at Fairplex Pomona from now to January 6\, Thursday through Sunday from 5:30 to 10 pm.  Don’t miss out!\n\n \n\n\n \n\n \n\n\nChinese Lantern Festival\n\nEvening skies will be ablaze with color and light at the Glade\, Picnic Hill and Lagoon of  Fairplex\, California. Experience an incredible\, authentic and amazing larger than life handcrafted lanterns\, live entertainment and food. Enjoy elements of culture such as Chinese folk artists demonstrating their ancient crafts\, all with the ambiance to reconnect with nature and to create lifelong memories with friends and family.
\n\n  \n\nEighth Grade is a 2018 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Bo Burnham. It is his feature film directorial debut. The plot follows the life and struggles of an eighth-grader\, played by Elsie Fisher\, during her last week of classes before graduating to high school. She struggles with anxiety in social situations but produces video blogs giving life advice.\n\n  \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8lFgF_IjPw[/embed]\nMovie Review by Isabel Lau (13)\n\nEighth grade is a time of adolescence\, youth\, and figuring out who oneself truly is. Bo Burnham explores these themes in his film Eighth Grade.\nEighth Grade  tells the story of Kayla Day\, played by Elsie Fisher in her journey of the last week of eighth grade. She posts advice videos on the Internet which garner no attention whatsoever\, and is given the label of the “quiet girl” at school. She often writes down in her notebook\, allowing the audience to view what her goals are at that certain point in the movie. Some parts of the movie that play an important role in Kayla’s change in character include popular girl Kennedy’s birthday party. It is clear from the beginning that Kennedy and her friends do not like Kayla\, however\, due to her mother\, Kennedy must invite Kayla to her birthday party\, to which gives Kayla a panic attack in the bathroom. Another part in the movie that definitely shapes Kayla as a character is during the High School shadow event. She meets Olivia\, a high schooler\, who she views as one of the coolest people to exist. Olivia one day invites Kayla to hang out with her friends. Unbeknownst to Kayla\, her father follows and watches her with her friends. It is not until one of Olivia’s friends points out some man’s creepy staring that Kayla realizes that her father has been watching her the whole time. This leads the two into an argument and prompts Kayla to get a ride home from one of Olivia’s friends. This turns out to be a bad decision on Kayla’s part\, as after Olivia is dropped off. Riley\, the driver\, begins to make moves on Kayla. After a few refusals from Kayla\, Riley backs off\, understanding that she will not give in. This brings Kayla to have a change in character.\nThis film was very insightful\, and with the movie that gave the audience some great laughs\, there was a powerful message behind it. I personally enjoyed it despite some of its more awkward moments. I do not believe that it deserves its R rating despite the sexual themes and swearing. It is a very raw movie that kids my age can most definitely relate to. It truly gives adults a real perception of what life is like for a 13 year old today.\nWe had multiple people speak during the talk\, and many questions were asked. Bo Burnham is very down to Earth and a hilarious person. Two psychiatrists were also brought in to see the scientific side of things. Two students of Harvard-Westlake were also brought in to see a younger person’s perspective on the movie. Through the audience-director discussion\, I learned a lot. Many young people feel the same anxiety and stress as grown adults\, telling us of social media’s impact on our lives today. He gave us his story as a comedian and how he would get panic attacks from performing on stage. He wanted to create a movie displaying these kinds of raw emotions and to give the older audience a different perception of teens nowadays.\nI enjoyed the event very much and am very thankful I was able to meet such an amazing director. The venue was wonderful\, and I learned a lot. This definitely spoke to me as a member of the youth myself.
