This is the last example of the whole golden age of ocean travel before the advent of jet planes. Now that it has been retired from the sea it’s been a hotel and attraction here in long beach longer than it has been in the see. It carries the most important people across the Atlantic Ocean. It would carry troops in pursued of freedom. It is a great example of how to make money at sea.\n2) What is your favorite tour of the Queen Mary?\nIt is the glory days because it has been historical contents. It starts at the time that the Queen Mary has started sailing at 1936 before the building of Queen Mary at 1930. It tells the story of how the famous people travel in the ship in 1930s like President Kennedy at the age of 25 or 26. All of the old time movie stars travel in the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary’s effort in the second World War. It tells in the glory days where it is the most fashionable way to cross the Atlantic Ocean between 1947 to 1967.  \n3) What is the most number of people on board the Queen Mary at the same time?\nIn July of 1943 during World War 2\, at the Queen Mary pairing 16683 people across the north Atlantic at one time. That is the greatest number of people carry in the ship in the entire history of the sea.\n4) Who are some famous people who have been on the Queen Mary?\nIn the days when the Queen Mary sail\, John F Kennedy\, Sr. Winson Churchwill the prime minister of England\, queen Elizabeth\, Clark Gabriel. Elizabeth Tailor \n \nInterview with Master Builder Ed Diment from Bright Bricks\n \n\n\n1) Can you tell us a little about Bright Bricks?\nIt is a company that I rode with my business partner. What we do is we build things out of lego. People over the world pay us to make legos. We are professional lego artist.\n2) How many pieces did it take to build the model of the Queen Mary?\nIt is about 250\,000 pieces. We didn’t count each pieces but we weight it and get the approximate of how many piece it was made.\n3) How long did it take to build the Queen Mary model?\nIt is about four months to build with four people working on it\n4) How many people did it take to build the Queen Mary model?\nOriginally two people but at the end since we run out of time\, we have five people to make sure it gets finished.\n5) Why did you make the LEGO model of Queen Mary ship?\nBecause I love making things out of lego. We actually have a big show related to ships in England. 15 years ago I was in queen mary\, so I decide to make a queen mary out of the legos.\n6) How long did it take for you to make the display?\n4 months go get it done. To make the display\, it takes about 40 hours as it gets transported in section.\n\n\n\n\n \nAaron 一日丫丫小記者後感\n \n\nToday was the day I have been looking forward to. I was going to meet Ed Diment from Bright Bricks\, a Certified Lego builder from England. They are professional Lego builders and they built big Lego projects for companies around the world. They build a really\, really big and cool Lego model of the Queen Mary. The Lego model of the Queen Mary will be open for the public to see on board the ship. Also\, I was going to get to meet Commodore Everette and interview him too. He is known as\, "The heart of the Queen Mary." I read and watched some videos about Commodore Everette\, the Queen Mary\, Ed Diment\, and Bright Bricks online before the interview. I was not as nervous this time\, but a little bit nervous and super excited. My parents took me to the Queen Mary for the first time last month. I wanted to go back to see the other parts of the ship. I wanted to stay longer the first time and it seemed too short again this time.\nSo today\, I met with Janice from Lajajakids.com and Jessica\, the other Jr. Journalist to do the interview.  We got to see real life Lego model of the Queen Mary. That was the biggest toy ship I have ever seen. Jessica and I interviewed Ed Diment from Bright Bricks first. He was super fast building with Legos. Mr. Ed said there are about 250\,000 Lego bricks used to build the model. I have never met such a fast Lego builder in my life. He was super nice and even showed Jessica and I how to build a sheep and a Lego city. It was like magic how he built things so fast. I had a lot of fun building with him. He was the coolest builder and a very friendly person.\n \nThen we got to interview Commodore Everette of the Queen Mary.  Commodore Everette was very very nice. He has worked on the Queen Mary for about 33 years and has met many people on the ship.  He said there are famous people like President Kennedy\, Winston Churchill\, Queen Elizabeth’s mother queen\, Clark Gable and so many other famous people who has travelled the Queen Mary. He also likes the Glory Days tour the most. I also learned that there were 16\,683 people on the ship at one time before to travel across the North Atlantic. The ship is super big and twice the size of the Titanic. I think that is super super big. He really loves the Queen Mary and was so kind to share his stories with us.  He even gave us a private tour.  I got to see the biggest room on the Queen Mary\, the shopping area\, the restaurant\, the kids play area\, and we even got to see a haunted room in the Queen Mary which was the swimming pool. I loved all his stories and wanted him to tell us more. I also really liked his uniform. My favorite part was when I got to wear Commodore Everett’s hat for a picture. It was so cool!\nThank you so much to Lajajakids.com\, Ed Diment from Bright Bricks\, and Commodore Everette from the Queen Mary for an awesome day! It served in World War II for 6 years. Right now\, it is in Long Beach and is a hotel & museum to public. -\nWhen I entered the lobby\, I saw a cool picture of the Queen Mary. In the shipyard\, I saw the Lego display of Queen Mary that was made by Bright Bricks\, which is a Lego company in England. They also had little tables of Lego to play with The Lego of Queen Mary was so awesome and cool. It was a creative and amazing project.\n\n\nAaron and I interviewed Ed Diment and Everette Hoard\, which is the captain of Queen Mary. Bright Bricks is a company that Ed created with a partner in Britain. They made it because Queen Mary was the greatest ocean liner. It took about 250\,000 Lego pieces to make the Queen Mary. It took around 4 months because there were people helping to make the Lego Queen Mary ship finished. To make the Lego ship\, it required 4 professional Lego builders.                          \n\nWhen Britain's most famous ocean liner was still a dream\, the Cunard Lines recruited the John Brown shipyard in Scotland to build what would become the world's most famous ocean liner. Some geocaches contain items that you can swop\, such as flashlights\, stationary\, compasses\, etc. Sometimes you can take an item but must then leave an item. Some geocaches are scavenger hunts and you need to solve the riddle to find the next cache. You can even get math geocache scavenger hunts if you want an educational experience. DESCRIPTION:【端午節快樂】\n今天是五月初五，傳統節日之端午節。除了賽龍舟和吃粽子，你對端午的認識還有多少？就讓我們來為大家補充一些關於端午節由來與習俗的知識吧！\n端午節為每年農曆五月初五，又稱端陽節、午日節、五月節、五日節、艾節、端五、重午、重五、午日、夏節、蒲節，本來是夏季的一個驅除瘟疫的節日，後來楚國詩人屈原於端午節投江自盡，就變成紀念屈原的節日，與春節、中秋等節日同屬東亞文化圈的中國大陸、日本、韓國、臺灣、越南的重要傳統節日。\n 賽龍舟 ～～\n龍舟競渡的活動，源自於戰國時代，是半宗教半娛樂的節目。後來，也用來紀念屈原。\n \n端午粽～～\n裹粽子的習俗，早在春秋時代已經形成。古時候的粽子裹成牛角狀，也稱角黍。經歷千年演變，才有今天的粽子。\n \n懸艾草菖蒲～～\n端午節是古代華人的衛生節。這一時段，家家都要灑掃庭除，保持居家衛生整潔。家家戶戶懸掛艾草菖蒲以驅五毒。\n\n\n除了中國以外，亞洲不少國家都有慶祝端午的習俗和獨特的慶祝方式，例如：掛五彩綫、懸掛鍾馗相、有佩戴香囊、點雄黃酒、掛荷包等等。\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n�\n\n�\n \n【端午節午時立蛋】\n\n\n端午節的典故和粽子的傳統大家都耳熟能詳，但是關於端午節午時立蛋的傳說你又知道多少呢？據說，每年農曆五月初五的端午節的午時（上午11時至下午1時）如果你能成功將雞蛋直立起來，就會為全年帶來好運氣！\n \n端午節立蛋的習俗流傳已久，而科學家的說法是，因為端午節與夏至幾乎重疊。夏至發生時，地球軸心傾斜朝向太陽，造成太陽直射北半球，太陽引力與地心引力相互拉扯，恰巧形成兩股反方向的拉扯力量，作用在雞蛋上，就容易使蛋直立起來。同時，為蛋找一個摩擦力大的地方，如水泥地或有微細粒子的地面，也有助於將蛋直立起來。而平時當然也可以立蛋，只是困難度較高罷了。所以這個星期六的端午節中午，大家千萬別錯過這個測試手勢和運氣的好機會喔！\n \n資料來源：昭明閣\n \n\n\n\n\n�\n【美 味 粽 子 健 康 吃】\n健康營養資料提供：吳希素營養師\n\n粽子是端午節的傳統食品。每到端午節前夕，家家戶戶都要浸糯米、洗粽葉和包粽子，除自家吃外，親友之間還相互饋贈。早於東漢時，人們已習慣於五月五日及夏至期間開始吃獨具清香而消暑的粽子了；吃粽子的習俗要到晉朝初年才固定在端午節，當時民間食用的粽子是用蘆葉裹高粱米做成的；至唐，粽子已經成為節日和市場上的美味食品了。歷經多朝，粽子的風味和粽餡的種類更形多樣了，習俗更已遠傳日本、朝鮮和東南亞諸國。現代粽子的品種、花色都日益繁富，形狀、用料和餡類亦按各地的飲食習慣和口味而有所不同。\n\n \n粽子的營養\n\n\n鹹肉粽的主要材料有糯米、綠豆、五花肉和鹹蛋黃。糯米主要提供碳水化合物，是日常飲食中熱量的主要來源。綠豆有豐富蛋白質及膳食纖維，而鹹蛋黃及五花肉則含有蛋白質、脂肪及膽固醇。比如一個包有豬肉、蝦米、香菇、栗子及鹹蛋黃的粽子（約250克），就有四份主食、兩份肉類，兩份油脂，而熱量就高達五百卡。差不多相等於一餐正餐的能量。\n\n\n如何吃粽子最健康\n要享受美味的粽子，同時要吃得健康，建議以粽子作為正餐的一部分，代替一餐的肉類及澱粉質。同時也要搭配青菜水果，以增加纖維攝取。此外，粽子本身已有調味料，所以應減少額外的調味料如豉油或白糖，以免攝入過多鹽及糖份。最後吃用粽子前都要充分加熱以殺菌，確保衛生。 \n肥胖及各種慢性病人，一定要控制吃的份量，尤其是傳統的肉粽，內餡和糯米都先炒過，用油量多、熱量高。有痛風症或糖尿病人士在食用粽子時要特別謹慎，而每次份量也不應超過半隻（約125克）。對痛風症病人而言，豆類含有一定普林成分，會影響病情，所以有豆類的粽子不宜經常食用。而對於糖尿病患者而言，一隻粽子大約有一碗飯的澱粉質，因此不宜多吃。至於膽固醇過高人士，就不宜吃蛋黃及肥肉。有膽結石、膽囊炎和胰腺炎不要吃肉粽、蛋黃粽和太油膩的粽子。除此之外，糯米比較難消化，所以腸胃不佳人士也不宜過量食用。\n\n\n 如何包粽子最健康\n包粽子時，最好選用符合「三少一多」 （少油，少鹽，少糖，多纖維）素材，調味少一點，應盡量選擇瘦肉而避免五花肥肉。以「板栗」取代蛋黃，加入紅蘿蔔、香菇、蘿蔔乾等，增加粽子的纖維質，或將糯米混加「五穀米」，增加粽子的纖維；另製作豆沙粽時，建議以植物油取代豬油，可降低粽子的熱量。\n\n\n選粽子應注意：\n1. 要看看粽子標籤上的生產日期和保質期，別買變質粽子\n2. 要小心粽子的口味變化，如果嘗到粽子餡有點酸、有點發苦、口味不正，不要再食用\n3. 要小心粽子的質量，一定要買商場，餐飲企業，超市的正規粽子\n4. 要小心粽子的外包裝，買安全，衛生的粽子\n5. 吃不完的粽子最好冷藏或冷凍，以保持新鮮\n 健康營養資料提供：吳希素營養師\n \n【你知道嗎？】L A 也有劃龍舟比賽 \, 而且還有兩個！\n \n\nLong Beach Dragon Boat Festival 長灘龍舟比賽\n\n\n\nDate: 7/18 - 7/19/2015\nLocation: Long Beach Marine Stadium\, 5225 East Paoli Way\, Long Beach CA 90803 \n\nhttp://www.lbdragonboat.com/\n \nLos Angeles Dragon Boat Festival\nDate: 10/17/2015\nLocation: Legg Lake Park\, Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in  South El Monte\nhttp://ladragonboat.com/\n

DESCRIPTION:專訪滾動機器人創辦人蔣彬與得獎團隊\n\n\n\n兩星期前，在參與《滾動機器人》初中生得獎團隊的同時，我們也和 Rolling Robots 創辦人蔣彬 Bing Jiang 談了不少有關她從航天科學家變身成為教育者的歷程、她對現今美國 STEM 教育的看法，當然還有十位大孩子如何克服艱難獲得全球大獎的歷程，千萬不要錯過喔！\n\n VEX 機器人世界杯錦標賽是世界最大規模的教育型機器人競賽。上個月，來自洛杉磯南灣滾動機器人公司的滾動機器人隊 – 7700B在2015 VEX機器人世界杯競標賽上榮獲中學組傑出獎 (Excellence Award) – 最高榮譽，並以全美中學編程設計技能最高成績獲得編程設計技能單項亞軍 (Programming Skills Silver Medal)。\n\n丫丫小記者很榮幸可以和這批既努力又有才華的大孩子們交流，我們更專訪了Rolling Robots 的創辦人蔣彬，了解她從航天科學家變身成為STEM 教育者的歷程。\n�\n 有關丫丫小記者和得獎團隊的初中生訪談的video ，請按此：\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP_0Zv9C8qs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nQ：請介紹下滾動的機器人團隊，公司的一些背景和目前的一些狀況？\nA: 滾動機器人是在 7年前由我和我先生2個人成立的。目的是給小學到中學的孩子提供新科技的園地。現在發展成為三個地點：West LA，Glendale和 Palos Verdes。這樣子小孩子可以在課後或者暑期過來學習機器人或目前新科技相關的一些知識。\n\n\n\n�\n\n�\n\n \n\n�\n\nQ：課程都涵蓋哪些內容呢？\n\nA：最開始從最基本科技的一些基礎知識講起，比如線路。在他們接觸到製作機器人的時候，我們就讓他們學習怎麼用工具，怎樣製作一個機器人。其實機器人最大的一部分是編程，一般 5-8歲的孩子還不了解這部分的知識，要等他們到 8歲半的時候，編程的頭腦才會變得比較成熟， 那時候我們就會開始讓他們做機器人的編程。在他們學會編程以後，就可以進入到打比賽的隊伍裡面，就會去參加各種比賽，這時候他們對整個機器人和所有科技方面的進步就會很快，因為有一個目標，就會花更多時間去學習。\n\nQ：據我所知，在做這個之前，您和您先生本身都是科學家，那想知道是什麼讓你們變身成為教育家？你們覺得這個轉變很大嗎？\n\nA：是的，我和我的先生之前都是學物理和電機方面的， 在波音公司作了很多年的關於衛星設計和製作的工作。之所以開機器人這家店，是因為我先生一直都很喜歡機械製造和機器人方面的東西，我又是非常喜歡小朋友的，我們覺得能夠有家長把他們的孩子交給我們去學習和培養這些方面的能力，我們覺得是非常欣慰的。一直以來我也對教育方面很感興趣，所以有這樣的機會結合我們對機器人和孩子的熱愛，成立一個對孩子成長有益的地方，對我們來說也是很好的一件事。\n\n�\n\nQ：在教育小朋友方面，需不需要上課呢？除了你對小朋友的熱愛以外，轉變成為教育家會不會覺得這是一個挑戰呢？\n\nA：教育一直以來都在我心中，打心底說一直以來我都是一個老師，可以說是業餘愛好一樣很多年了，一直在探求，尋求和學習。怎麼樣才能最有效的教育孩子，怎麼能夠發展他們對生活的熱愛和他們自己的愛好，找到能讓每個小孩最好的發展的途徑。我自己也有小孩，而且不是每個小孩都是一樣的，你要找到他們自己所熱愛的東西，然後再盡快地讓他們在這個領域裡面去學習和發展他們的興趣，而且要培養他們各方面的能力。我自己體會到，很多小孩子都很喜歡機器人，而且機器人又包括非常多的方面，不只是機械和電機，STEM數理化，還包括很多人文方面的東西，比如大家要合作，才能把事情做好，所以我覺得是一個很綜合性的東西。我在教育領域一直在探索最好的教學方法， 我覺得自己找到了一個很好的途徑。所以現在是把理念上的東西應用到實際中去。\n\n�\n\n�\n\n   \n\n�\n\n    \n\n�\n\nQ：我記得我之前在亞洲受教育的時候，就是很早就把小朋友分成文科和理科。目前在美國的教育中大家都很推崇STEM教育，你覺得科技或者說數理科技對於所有小朋友都適合嗎？還是根據他的本性，對這方面感興趣或者熱愛的小朋友去鼓勵他們去做？還是說任何小朋友都應該去學習和接觸這些知識？對於男生，女生，年齡問題的方面來講呢？\n\n�\n\n�\n\nＡ：美國不像中國，中國很早就把數理化看作很重要的一個學習領域，所以大家都很重視。而美國現在才開始重視起來，因為美國的工作職位需要，因為工作位置都填不滿，所以確實是需要這方面的人才，而且是很優秀的人才。所以他們才會推STEM教育。其實在我們成立這個公司之前，STEM還沒有這麼推崇，但是主要是考慮到很多小朋友對這方面有興趣，但是他們又沒有地方去學習，成立這樣一家公司，是需要一些投資，還需要很多硬件的東西，硬件比軟件的東西來得難一些，所以很多小朋友沒有地方去做這些東西，所以我們才想給小朋友提供這個空間。從男生女生的角度來講，我覺得女生很多時候是因為社會觀念的問題，沒有機會去接觸到這些東西，當他們看到了很多小孩子在長大以後，才意識到原來自己也很喜歡這些東西，就是以前沒有機會，那對這些小朋友來說，現在的STEM推崇對她們是非常有好處的。但我不認為每一個小孩子都要變成一個STEM學生，所以就讓他們從小做起，在5\, 6歲的時候就對這個有接觸，等他們長大了以後就會做一個比較好的選擇。那時候就不會面對一個一無所知的東西，那樣的話當然就不會作選擇了。\n\n這也就是為什麼我們把滾動機器人的學習放在小學生，而不是放在中學或者高中，當他們從小有這個概念和意識覺得可以做這件事的時候，那將來男孩女孩做選擇也是他們自己的事了。\n\n�\n\n�\n\nQ：因為這幾年STEM成為一個大熱，好像在教育方面又多了很多以這個為主題的玩具，那麼從普通家長來說，你覺得這些玩具對小孩子有沒有幫助？\n\nA：是的尤其過去的一年半的樣子，開始有很多新的教小孩子學編程方面的玩具非常多，當然大家意識到編程這方面非常重要。其實很多玩具都是很好的，但是我的感覺就是有的玩具花很短的時間去做，它能做的事情就那麼多，因為編程的東西其實是很複雜的東西，能讓小朋友一貫的去學習和玩是不容易做到的。這也就是我覺得我們的滾動機器人公司，一直以來都能減輕家長的負擔，因為小孩子來這裡是東西學到了，至於有沒有玩具是第二位的。所以我跟家長講，不要買一個$100多的機器人放在家裡，玩兒一會，自己也不知道該怎麼辦了，但是來我們這裡學習的話，學習到的知識是在他們腦子裡的，而且學到的不只是一個玩具，它們可以根據自己的興趣去發展。我們也在尋找新的設計好的玩具，很快的把它放到我們的課程裡面，這樣小孩子就能接觸到最新最好的東西。\n\n�\n\n�\n\nQ：下面講一講，如果小朋友在這裡上課的話，如果他們成為一個團隊，會定期去參加一些比賽，那麼這些比賽是誰去策劃和組織呢？比賽是具有權威性的嗎？是在美國還是世界各地呢？　\n\n�\n\nA：小朋友在我們這裡學習之後，尤其是在心理上成熟一些以後，我們就會讓他們參加我們的比賽隊伍，現在我們最重要的比賽是VEX機器人比賽，　是一個國際性的比賽，每年從4月份開始，告訴大家新一年的比賽項目是什麼，一直到下一年的4月份都有各種各樣程度的比賽，從當地的比如說洛杉磯地區的，一直到加州，然後再打到全國，然後最高的是國際性的，今年大概有權世界27個國家的隊伍來參加，一共有500多個隊伍來參加這個國際比賽，所以說全世界的學習機構或者各種團體都以這種形式給小朋友這個機會去學習和得到獎勵的一個機會。\n\n�\n\n除此以外，我們還參加其它的一些比賽，相對來說規模比較小，一般是1-2個月之內，像最近我們要參加的一個比賽，這是一個由幾家大公司組織起來的一個和月亮有關的比賽。我們會有2-3個隊伍在接下來的1個月去參加和學習從這個比賽中。其實我們也很幸運，過去的幾年中我們參加的比賽常常獲獎，那也增加了我們的信心之後會參加更多這樣的比賽，小朋友們也從這些比賽中受益是非常大的。\n\n�\n\n�\n\n   \n\n�\n\n\n\n�\n\n�\n\nQ：你之前講過 VEX 是最大最權威的比賽？能介紹一下麼？\n\nA：VEX是他們品牌的名字，這家公司的名字是VEX Robotics．比賽就是VEX Robotics Competition。也是全世界最大的教育性機器人比賽，我們參加這個已經有2年了，我們有小學生，初中生和高中生隊伍，為什麼要這樣組織呢？因為我們覺得學生之間的學習是非常重要的，高中的學生會幫助我們一起教育初中的學生，初中的學生又會幫助我們去教育小學生，所以他們是一個互相學習的團隊。去年我們一直打到世界杯比賽，得到了團體項目獎，鼓勵我們這種三種程度的團隊做的很好。今年我們的一個中學隊伍一直打到世界杯比賽，拿到了最高獎，也就是Excellent Award傑出獎，也就是這個比賽在全世界初中級的最高獎。在這個過程中，小朋友學習了怎麼樣給自己樹立目標，從當地打起，打到州級，再進入世界級，過程經歷了很多小小的勝利，一步一步，還需要很多策略性的計劃，都是他們在這個過程中學習的很好的一個機會。所以今年在隊伍裡的10個小朋友就收穫非常大。\nQ：世界杯４月份的比賽在哪裡舉行呢？當時的團隊經歷一個什麼樣的過程？可否講解一下。\nA：這個團隊是去年的４月份左右組織起來的，是這個隊伍第二年的比賽，７月份的時候我們去夏威夷參加了一個夏季比賽，那個時候我們的隊伍還比較初級，做的機器人也比較簡單，因為剛剛學會怎麼做新的比賽項目，在那裡就遇到很多國際的其他隊伍，有些隊伍的機器人製作是相當成熟的，而且我們看到了他們有多優秀，所以從那以後，隊伍回來就不斷學習，還參加了10個左右的地域性的比賽，通用這些比賽，他們拿到了各種獎項，其中有一個獎項就叫Excellent Award傑出獎，拿到這個獎項就合格參加州級比賽了，如果再拿到州級的傑出獎，就能夠參加世界比賽了。但是比賽當天由於我們出師不利，沒有能夠拿到最高獎，當時還有唯一的一條途徑，就是通過我們的編程能力，就是一個編程和控制機器人的比賽，當時我們就拿到了州級編程比賽第一名，但是這個還不能去參加世界杯，必須要拿到全世界前30名的成績，必須是高中生，才能參加世界比賽。州級比賽結束後，我們決定再參加一場比賽，來充分錶現他們的編程能力，小朋友花很多時間，連夜苦戰，提高他們的編程水平，結果我們達到了全美國編程中學生第一名的成績，全世界我們排第七名。所以我們以全世界前30名的機會進入了這個比賽。這個機會是很好的，當時一共有27個國家來參加這個比賽，150個隊伍，分成了2部分，我們這個部分是裡面有75個隊伍在打，大概每個隊伍近10場的比賽，我們當時排在第8名，後來就參加了quarter和semi final的比賽，後來我們輸在了semi final的那場比賽中，當時那場比賽是和世界上最強的一個隊伍比賽，他也是全部比賽最高分的隊伍，是很不容易的。除此之外呢，我們小朋友還在網上參加了很多競賽，有6項（要求其實只有2項），所以這一年中，小朋友作了很多工作，還幫助介紹機器人給周圍社區，還幫助組織參加當地的比賽，在這種情況下，我們拿到了最高獎。當時150個隊伍裡只有11能夠有資格獲得這個最高獎，所以是很不容易的。\n
