\n\nCarissa 報導 :\n\nHave you ever\, as a kid\, wanted to prove to your parents that you could do something that was beyond their expectations? I definitely have. My name is Carissa Yu and recently\, I performed Cantonese Opera at the Baldwin Park Performing Arts Center as a part of the Eagle Scout project of Anthony Lam. Anthony\, one of the oldest among my Cantonese opera group\, was doing this project to raise awareness of autism\, a disorder he was diagnosed with at a young age.  Anthony invited two groups who helped him develop speech and social skills: Perfect Harmony Cantonese Opera Cultural Exchange Association and the String & Bamboo music group\, to perform at this event.\n\nWhen I first heard that we were performing at the autism awareness event\, I felt like this was a great idea and opportunity to spread the word about autism\, as well as to show that even kids can make an impact in the community.  When I first met Anthony in our Chinese Opera group\, he wasn't very sociable and he did not talk to us much. But as time went on\, he became friendlier and it is quite amazing to see the transformation.  He is like our big brother now\, helping us in our class with his erhu to practice singing.\n\nOn the event day\, all the kids worked together in order to make the event a success.\n\nEarly that morning\, we arrived at the performing center to get ready. There were Boy Scouts already running around setting up and my teachers and the Cantonese opera makeup artists were ushering us into the dressing rooms to begin the makeup process.\n\nAfter a few hours\, the event began. Backstage\, as I was getting ready for my performance\, I heard Anthony sing and play the national anthem on the erhu through the speakers. Then\, he made his speech about the event that he organized and how he wanted to raise awareness about autism. Before he made his speech\, an incident occurred. Anthony couldn’t find his notes for his speech\, but he was still able to go out and improvise a very meaningful speech.\n\nAfter\, It was my turn to perform\, followed by many of my fellow performers\, some of which are only 5 years old. A professional speaker and a parent speaker also spoke about autism and their experiences. Almond Chan\, another kid with autism\, performed on the ukulele while singing to show that it is possible to overcome autism.\n\nI believe that this event was definitely a great success and it is incredible what Anthony was able to put together. This brings me to the topic of how kids can give back to the community. I have been doing Cantonese opera for 6 years now and as I was younger\, I didn't really think much about how I can use this cultural art to help out everyone. Now\, I believe that although I am only 12\, I can still continue to preserve this tradition and my heritage\, perform for the elderly at retirement homes\, and teach people about this art. I think that anyone\, it doesn't matter if you are a kid or have struggled with a problem\, can overcome the obstacle and make a difference in this world. I think that this event and everyone in it\, Anthony\, Almond\, all the Cantonese Opera performers\, the Chinese music performers\, and the Boy Scouts\, can prove that.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n活動背景：\n\nAnthony 從小被診斷為自閉症，但是在他不屈不撓的學習精神，以及家人的鼓勵和支持下，Anthony 如今不但是才華出眾的二胡國樂青年演奏家，更是粵劇演員和詠春好手呢！ \n\nAnthony Lam 的自序：\n\nI was diagnosed with autism when I was about 4 years old. However\, over the past 13 years\, I was able to overcome my condition through the help and support of the Regional Center\, the schools I have attended\, my church\, my Boy Scout Troop\, Perfect Harmony Cultural Exchange Association\, String and Bamboo Music\, and\, most importantly\, my family and friends. Because of the positive circumstances and opportunities I grew up with\, I want to use myself as an example not only to stress the importance of early intervention\, but also to encourage the families of children with special needs to never give up. Thus\, it is not only the goal of my event\, but also one of my passions and goals in life\, to raise awareness for autism so that our society will come to understand more about autism and eventually accept people with the condition\, which will result in a more fair and peaceful environment for anybody to grow up in.\n\n

SUMMARY:Brand New Hello Kitty Dental Clinic opens up in SGV! ~ a La JaJa Kids JJ Exclusive
DESCRIPTION:Most people\, and children\, are terrified of even the thought of going to the dentist. What can solve this problem? Well of course the sweet and cute Hello Kitty and her good friends like Gudetama and Melody from Sanrio! (Hello Kitty can solve any problem to be honest)\n\nGet an exclusive look with Junior Journalists Ryan\, Carissa\, and Phoebe of the inside of America's first ever Hello Kitty themed dental clinic\, with a look at the grand opening\, an exclusive interview with the head dentist\, and a fun look at the wonderful world of Hello Kitty dentistry.\n\nJunior Journalists: Phoebe Zhang\, Carissa Yu\, Ryan Lo\n\nVideo and editing: Justin Zhang\n\nTemple City Hello Kitty Parklane Dental\n\nAddress: 9636 Las Tunas Dr\, Temple City\, CA 91780\, USA\n\nPhone: +1 626-247-4788\n\nhttps://youtu.be/EtlUiPiknZ0\n\nhttps://youtu.be/EtlUiPiknZ0\n\n\nPhoebe Zhang (age 9)\nThere's a grand opening celebrated at Parklane Dental\, located at temple city. They are partnering with Sanrio in the first dental office in the U.S. that features Hello Kitty and Friends. Parklane Dental's hello kitty themed office will help patients of all ages and they will help their patients feel ease when they are taking a trip to the dental. Parklane Dental was founded by Dr.Eric To. He made this dental office that is hello kitty themed because when his daughter was small\, she had to go in the hospital to do surgeries so she was really nervous. She had to be isolated with other people so she couldn't really talk to other people. Eric To brought her hello kitty stuff animals so she could feel ease. That's why this dental is hello kitty themed.\n\nThey have a pediactric dentistry\, orthodontics\, oral surgeries\, dental implants\, and exceptional cosmetic dentistry. When you walk through the door\, you're experience and imagination will happen. There is one room that is hello kitty themed that is almost all pink and there is another room that is gudetama themed which is almost all yellow. Next to the hello kitty themed room is the waiting room where there are stuff animals and books.\n\nWhen I first walked in\, I was surprised about how good and detailed it looked. I didn't really see it at the first time because we couldn't go on a tour. The second time I went there\, we had a tour so we got to see what was in there. There were two rooms that were themed and I liked the gudetama room more. When I saw the waiting room\, I was surprised because it was so detailed and it was so cute. There were soft chairs\, bookshelves\, books\, stuff animals\, and light clouds that were in the ceiling. We even got to hold giant toothbrushes. I think my most favorite about this dental is the waiting room because it's so detailed and  cute. Now I will be recommending everyone to come to this dental.\n\n

Opening night for the show was on March 2nd with performances running through March 24th.\nI have been to various plays and musicals\, but never one like this. This play had only one actor\, Nancy Ma. She played numerous roles at once. She portrayed various characters with different personalities and genders. The theater was a small intimate venue which made me feel closely involved and part of the story.\nHome is a story that begins\, like so many in America\, with a young child born to immigrant parents\, who grows up having to face the challenges and frustrations of  assimilation in America. This is the life story of actor Nancy Ma as written and performed by her. I have to say this is a truly moving and dramatic performance that touched me deeply.  I saw my mom with tears from the corner of my eye.\n \nThroughout the play\, Nancy Ma is quite effective in communicating the complexities of her life in that she is constantly forced to balance the culture of her family´s China with the ways of Americans in New York City. Her story takes us across the country and to Los Angeles as she evolves and comes to recognize and understand what home really means in modern U.S Society.\nAs the only actor in this production. Nancy Ma showcases her incredible and exceptional talent and artistic acumen. Nancy Ma played several character roles. She not only played herself but also portrayed her mother\, her father\, her sister\, her uncle\, her college boyfriend\, her classmate\, and even her grandmother. To see these characters come to life before my very eyes were truly astonishing. She played them so effectively that it was like she morphed into each one of them!\nI have seen many shows and productions and this is one of the best shows I have ever seen! Nancy Ma was captivating to the point where I would hang on her every word. Her performance was very touching in a human way while at the same time intensely riveting\, At the close of the show\, the essence of her story and performance moved me emotionally when an enlarged image of her family was projected on the wall behind her: My connection to Nancy Ma and her family was now ever so real!\nI asked for a picture after the show and caught a few words with Nancy Ma. She seems like a very humble\, friendly and down-to-earth person who really values her family. This was one of the parts that I enjoyed the most in the show as it took us into the home and life of an american born chinese immigrant who in the end places value in family. I would gladly see this show again and recommend it to anyone who has an American dream.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcLLxKgtB-o\nMore information on the show is below:\nWhen: Now through March 24 (Thursday through Sunday)\nThursdays at 8 pm: March 14\, March 21\nFridays at 8 pm: March 8\, March 15\, March 22\nSaturdays at 8 pm: March 9\, March 16\, March 23\nSundays at 4 pm: March 10\, March 17\, March 24\nWhere: The Los Angeles Theater Center\, 514 S Spring Street\, Los Angeles\, CA 90013 [map]\nTo purchase tickets\, call (866) 811 - 4111 or go to http://thelatc.org\nTicket prices: $24 - $60\nParking: $5 with box office validation\, Joe’s Parking structure\, 530 S Spring St (immediately south of the theater)\n*Check age advisory\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Junior Journalists at Chinese New Year Family Night at Plymouth Elementary
DESCRIPTION:\n\nPlymouth Elementary School in Monrovia offers a wonderful dual immersion program in Mandarin and English. This Lunar New Year\, our junior journalists\, Yilin and Phoebe\, visit Plymouth and attended its Chinese New Year Family Night last week. They also talked with Ms. Connie Wu\, Assistant Superintendent\, to learn more about this unique program that benefits families who are learning Mandarin.\n\nThe Family Celebration Night took place on Friday\, February 8\, 2019\, at the Plymouth Elementary School. It included performances from several classes in the school ranging from the afterschool program to TK through third grade. The celebration connects Chinese culture to American culture\, and over 150 guests enjoyed a wonderful time.\n\nIn its fourth year\, the Plymouth Elementary Mandarin Dual Immersion program is a 50% & 50% which teaches the students both English and Chinese during school time. What is interesting about this program is that the Mandarin courses are taught not only by Chinese teachers\, but a lot of American teachers! The Monrovia school district fully supports this new way of teaching as it allows the student and teacher to get to know other interesting things other than just American culture.\n\nClick here to learn more about Plymouth Elementary and their special program: https://plymouth.monroviaschools.net/\n\nhttps://youtu.be/kFbwsqKCxZ4\nA Time of Celebration\n\n\n\nby junior journalist Yilin Yao\nOn February 8\, 2019\, we were invited to attend Plymouth Elementary School’s special event that was celebrating Chinese New Year. The school has both English and Chinese classes\, and they offer  50% instruction that is provided in English and 50% instruction that is provided in Chinese. It was also quite exciting to witness elementary-aged children performing in beautiful and festive costumes. The students showcased many different types of entertainment like singing\, dancing\, and even acted out a play. I was impressed by how well they could memorize the different dance routines as well as remember all the words to the song\, all while being so synchronized.\nOne of my favorite performances was when the children stole the stage with their play that showed the importance of being caring towards others. The play began with hungry and thirsty pigs traveling through the dry desert. As they were traveling\, the monkey kings watched over them. As nighttime approached\, the pigs were exhausted and soon were fast asleep. During the middle of the night\, one curious pig woke up and decided to wander around. He stumbled across one of the biggest\, greenest and roundest watermelons he had ever seen! He thought about how to cut the watermelon into equal pieces to share between himself and the monkey kings. He figured he’d cut the watermelon into four equal pieces to give to each of the three monkey kings while saving the last one for himself. Soon after\, he bit into his own piece of the sweet and tasty melon. It was so good that before he knew it\, he had eaten the whole melon. As he walked back to his group\, he heard a voice coming from the sky. The pig quickly threw the watermelon peels as far as he could before the monkey king spoke again. The monkey king had warned him to quickly return to his group for they would be waking up soon to travel further into the desert. When he returned\, he curled up next to his friends and was fast asleep as if he had never left. A few hours later\, he and the group began traveling again. It was only a matter of time before he slipped on a watermelon peel. Then\, another slip that was followed by the next slip and finally the last slip. The little pig recognized that it was the watermelon peels he had tried so hard to get rid of. Every pig began laughing at him and he felt quite embarrassed. He soon learned that this was his punishment for not caring about his friends and the monkey kings.\nThe more I thought about the show\, I had come to appreciate the amount of hard work\, effort\, and time these children and their teachers had put in. The whole event felt just like a big family gathering and was such a positive experience. It was a pleasure to be able to talk with the children\, parents\, and the principal. I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience just as much as I loved watching it.\n \nby junior journalist Phoebe Zhang (age 9)\nOn February 8th\, Plymouth Elementary School in Monrovia always celebrate Chinese New Year. It is called " Chinese New Year family night." The Chinese New Year family night is hosted by the school's PTA. In the family night\, there is a performance that represents the theme ( Chinese New Year). There Are dances\, songs\, and acting the performance. Plymouth Elementary School has a Mandarin dual immersion program. A the program in the school helps students in the school we're having trouble with Mandarin. It also helps students in the school learn how to speak\, communicate\, and write in Mandarin. The program teaches students how to communicate in Mandarin because in the future you might need to speak Mandarin. Half of the teaching is done in English and half in Mandarin. Of the 2019 family night\, the first performance was students dancing and singing to the song " Gong Xi". The next performance was students dressed up as Little Pigs because this year's animal zodiac sign is the pig. The performers sing and danced. The third performance was students dressed up in a white Tshirt\, bandana around their neck\, and sunglasses. Some people were wearing a denim jacket. They sing and danced to " The Three Little Pigs". The final performance was students acting. When I walked in the school\, I was shocked because there were so many people. I sat in the front of the audience and watch the kids perform. About 20 minutes later\, the performance was finally over. There were four performances in total. Three hours pass by\, and I finally got to go home.\n   \n\n\n
