SUMMARY:Santa Monica Pier Carousel 100th Birthday ~~ June 12
DESCRIPTION:\nFor eaters seeking a dessert conceived from the opening era\, this is a rare opportunity to indulge in a limited-edition sweet-salty potato-chip sundae inspired by Pier history and created by Kevin McCafferty\, dessert historian and owner of Soda Jerk's soda fountain. The Brass Ring Sundae is one scoop of salted caramel topped with caramel sauce\, one scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate\, all covered in crushed potato chips with a single chip (the brass ring) on top.\n\nThe Looff Hippodrome is on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987 and was declared a Santa Monica Landmark in 1976. “When it first opened\, the sound of the band organ from the Carousel could be heard all the way to downtown Santa Monica\,” explains Jim Harris\, historian for the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corp. and author of the acclaimed book\, Santa Monica Pier – A Century on the Last Great Pleasure Pier.\n\n“In many ways\, it was and remains the heart of the city and we are excited to celebrate Looff’s dream 100 years later. It is a testament to his great vision that the Hippodrome has withstood the test of time.”In addition to the historic carousel\, there are the distinctive second floor apartments (which will be included in tours as part of the celebration).\n\nToday\, the apartments remain as offices\, but were once the coolest series of apartments in the city where only a select few (including the carousel operator) made their home. The cast of characters living this unique beachside life included artists and actors and assorted notables ranging from Colleen Creedon\, a longtime political activist\, actor Paul Sand and writer William Saroyan.\n\nGuests and honorees have included activists Cesar Chavez and Daniel Ellsberg\, and it’s said that acclaimed singer Joan Baez spent so much time at the apartments that she too was considered a Hippodrome resident.\n\n\n\n   \n\nDate：Sunday\, June 12\n\nTime：11am – 7pm\n\nPlace：Santa Monica Pier\n\nAddress：200 Santa Monica Pier\, Santa Monica\, California 90401\n百年慶好玩活動：\n\n\t$0.05 乘坐旋轉木馬的超級優惠\n\t免費參觀珍貴碼頭百年歷史照片展\n\t復古照相館：拍一張1920年代的老照片\n\t與懷舊明星來個開心合照：Marilyn Monroe\, Charlie Chaplin or Popeye\n\t嚐嚐限量版美味小食：薯片雪糕杯！\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Giant Lighted Rabbits "Intrude" Downtoan LA ~~ June 5 to 11
DESCRIPTION:\n\nArts Brookfield presents a four-city national tour of Intrude\, a highly acclaimed public art installation by Australian artist Amanda Parer. Intrude features monumental sculptural rabbits\, each sewn in white nylon\, inflated and internally lit. The installation will tour to Brookfield’s premier properties across the United States\, including sites in Houston\, Los Angeles and Denver. Following a preview of the rabbit sculptures in Toronto\, Intrude launches at Brookfield Place New York (230 Vesey Street) with seven sculptures on Sunday\, April 17\, 2016.\n\nFor its national tour of Intrude\, Arts Brookfield commissioned two giant rabbits\, each scaling over two-stories in height\, with one approximately 39 feet high and the other 39 feet long. These rabbits will join Intrude’s five original sculptures\, which have brought a joyful spirit to more than 19 major cities throughout the world\, including London\, Perth\, Paris and Boston. The New York launch of the installation marks the one-year anniversary of the reopening of Brookfield Place New York and celebrates more than 25 years of Arts Brookfield’s animation of non-traditional spaces with world-class arts and cultural experiences that are free and accessible to the public.\n\nDates:\n\nJune 5 ~ 11\n\nLocations: [map]\n1。Bank of America Plaza (333 South Hope Street)\n2。Wells Fargo Center (330 South Hope Street)\n3。FIGat7th (735 South Figueroa Street)\n\n  \n\n\n"A light installation of giant inflatable bunnies is touring North America\, just in time for Easter. Intrude is by artist Amanda Parer\, who wants to invoke the childhood fairytale associations of bunny rabbits\, but imbues the work with a darker subtext. “The rabbit is also an animal of contradiction\,” writes Parer in her description of the installation. In the artist's native Australia\, rabbits are pests introduced by white colonialists and whose population soon became entirely out of control\, decimating many native plant species. The installation arrives in San Francisco next week\, and will spend the spring and summer New York\, LA\, Houston\, and Colorado.: Creators Project\n\n\n\n\n\n

Known for their complex\, polyphonic vocal arrangements\, and their expertise in Bulgarian folk instruments from the bagpipes to the gadulka\, this group will introduce you to a side of Bulgarian culture you never knew existed.\n\nSpring Thunder Music Association\n Noon–1:00 p.m.\n This Monterey Park-based ensemble was founded in 1980 with hopes of bringing the sounds of traditional Chinese music to Southern California. Their mission was a success\, spawning an ensemble consisting of more than 30 accomplished musicians from Mainland China\, Taiwan\, and Hong Kong. Their musical styles are pulled from all parts of China\, employing traditional Chinese instruments\, and comprising both solo and ensemble performances. If you ever wanted to hear the dizi (flute)\, pipa (lute)\, huqins (fiddle)\, yangqin (dulcimer)\, and ancient guqin (zither) all at the same time\, then this is your chance.\n\nRaices Peruanas\n1:45–2:30 p.m and 4:45–5:45 p.m.\nFeel free to dance along as this group takes you on a tour of their native Peru. Raices Peruanas is a cultural institution dedicated to spreading the Peruvian culture through song and dance. The group's members include native-born Peruvians\, as well as American performers of Peruvian descent\, creating a rich\, all-encompassing blend of their shared culture. The performance includes two traditional Peruvian dances that originated in the Andes mountains\, as well as Marinera Norteña\, the national dance of Peru. In between\, musicians will be performing traditional Peruvian folk songs.\n\n\n\nMUSEUM LECTURE HALL\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nUCLA Music of China Ensemble\n11:15 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 2:45–3:30 p.m.\nPlaying with traditional Chinese wind and string instruments\, this group performs pieces all across the Chinese tradition–from Kun opera of the 15th century to modern compositions to traditional silk-and-bamboo music from Shanghai. Led by Li Chi\, one of the world's most accomplished erhu (two-string bowed fiddle) players and adjunct professor of ethnomusicology at UCLA\, this ensemble is committed to honoring every aspect of Chinese music's past and present.\n\nStories of the Cave Temples\n1:15–2:00 p.m. and 4:15–5:00 p.m.\nInspired by the very stories stunningly rendered on the cave temple walls\, dancers and musicians from UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures will take viewers on a journey through three stages of the Buddha's existence: his past life as a wise and kindhearted multicolored deer\, his path to Enlightenment\, and his teachings as portrayed in the cave paintings and the Buddhist scriptures. Just as the cave paintings showcase artistry from across Eurasia\, this presentation combines the song\, movement\, and images from China\, India\, and the Middle East in a unique Los Angeles context. Children and adults alike are invited to participate in the interactive portions of the performance. Presented in collaboration with the UCLA Confucius Institute.\n\nDEMONSTRATION\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nArtist Demonstration with Tang Qingnian: The Virtue of Brush and Ink\n11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 2:00–4:00 p.m.\nThis demo takes viewers on a journey through three stages of the Buddha's existence: his past life as a wise and kindhearted multicolored deer\, his path to Enlightenment\, and his teachings as portrayed in the cave paintings and the Buddhist scriptures. Just as the cave paintings showcase artistry from across Eurasia\, this presentation combines the song\, movement\, and images from China\, India\, and the Middle East in a unique Los Angeles context. Children and adults alike are invited to participate in the interactive portions of the performance.\n\nArtist\, art critic\, and international curator Tang Qingnian will give an introduction to the art of Chinese calligraphy and ink painting. The artist will share some of his recent ink-based artwork\, including traditional calligraphy and more avant-garde mixed-media works\, and introduce the art form's key aesthetic and conceptual elements. Presented in collaboration with the UCLA Confucius Institute.\n\nWORKSHOPS\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.\nWhirlwind Binding (Xuanfeng Zhuang) with Erin Zamrzla\nThe Whirlwind Binding is one of the unique bindings discovered among the Dunhuang treasures. The pages are bound together and then rolled up\, resembling a scroll. With a few simple materials\, you can create your very own Whirlwind-Bound Book. The handmade papers are a great place to stamp the date or practice your calligraphy.\n\nCalligraphy Exploration Station\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nTry your hand at shufa\, the Chinese art of calligraphy. For centuries\, Chinese artists and literati have used three simple tools—the maobi brush\, black ink\, and rice paper—to create dazzling works of art employing a wide range of forms and techniques. Museum goers of all ages are invited to freely experiment and explore with real Chinese maobi brushes and ink at this open calligraphy workshop. Volunteers from UCLA will help those interested in learning traditional brushstrokes and simple Chinese characters. Presented in collaboration with the UCLA Confucius Institute.\n\nPostcard Workshop\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nUsing colorful markers and stamps create a one-of-a-kind postcard to send to friends and family from Los Angeles to China. We supply the stamps and mail it for you!\n\nCENTRAL GARDEN\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nSinging Bowls in the Garden\nNoon–5:00 p.m.\nIn celebration of the Cave Temples of Dunhuang\, sound therapy practitioners from Los Angeles's Seicho Foundation will activate several areas in the lower Getty garden with singing bowls. Practitioners will play bowls while individuals and families wander in and out of the circles\, sitting\, standing\, or lying amongst the bowls to experience their resonance and vibrations. Additionally\, hands-on experiences will be offered and visitors will be invited to try their hands coaxing melodic tones from the bowls.
