Children get a better sense of who they are and where they've come from\, have higher self-esteem\, even better grades in school. Parents are often less stressed when there's an active\, supportive grandparent in their children's life. Older people live longer\, healthier lives\, with less memory loss and depression\, and are much happier when they're actively involved with the young.\n\n"These relationships give you things you can't get anywhere else\," says Legacy Project Chair and intergenerational educator Susan V. Bosak. "They make us feel connected – not only to each other\, but to something bigger\, to the flow of life\, to the past and to the future."\n\nBosak offers these ideas to bring generations closer:\n\nSharing bits of your life story over time can help grandchildren get to know you. If you don't know where or how to start\, the Legacy Project website has a free downloadable Fill-in-the-Blanks Life Story and a Generations Scrapbook.\n\nPrompt informal family storytelling with a game of Did You Ever...? Children and adults can share stories and compare memories from different times. For example\, did you ever go on a boat\, sleep in a cabin or tent\, act in a play\, stay in a fancy hotel?\n\nGrandparents should get involved in their grandchildren's education\, and schools should put together events to make them feel welcome.\n\nGrandparents and grandchildren should let each other know what they think is special about the other. Have your children make a card for their grandparents for this Sunday. Grandparents.com has a card you can print and your child can color.\n\n"Remember that children carry the legacy not only of what you give them\, but also the void that's left by when you don't\," says Bosak. We did!\n\nLa JaJa Kids junior journalists Ryan and Kyran witnessed a day of totally awesome international dragon boat races at Long Beach this summer. Though the weather is a *little* hot\, the passion of the racing paddlers was stronger than ever!\n\nNot only did we learned how to paddle from professional paddlers\, we also interviewed the international dragon boat team from Trinidad and Topago\, and talked with some 11-year-old dragon boat paddlers\, and enjoyed a totally fun day!\n\nhttps://youtu.be/gWhag7fk5EQ\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2016 Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival\nBy Kyran\n\n\n\nOn July 31\, 2016 3 junior journalists Ryan\, Jaslyne and I went to Dragon Boat Festival in Long Beach. We would interview 3 Dragon boat captains and learn how to paddle a dragon boat! When we arrived I was amazed by how many boats were there! .The dragon boat race is held in Lake Gregory. There are over 200 teams and each team has two tents for their team. So that means there are over 400 tents!\n\nThe first team we interviewed was from UC San Diego Dragon Boats. We learned how to paddle from the team before the interview. The first step was left hand straight\, right hand loose\, left hand at the bottom and right hand holding the top. It was very important for the team to row at the same time and they practice twice every week\, Saturday and Sunday. The reason why it’s important to paddle at the same time it’s because of the timing and teamwork will make the boat go faster.\n\nThe Second team we interviewed was from the Pans and Paddles. They comes from Trinidad & Tobago\, a twin-island country in the southern Caribbean. The coach Keith told me the hardest part for the team is that they have to practice in the Caribbean's rough seas and the big waves\, they call it survival paddling. Also\, What is important about coaching is that he does not care about the team losing or winning\, what he cares about is seeing his team doing the best they can.\n\nThe last team we interviewed is called the Oyster Point Dragon team\, they are from San Francisco and they are a youth team who used to watch their parents compete in the dragon boat race. They were wearing an unique uniform\, the teammates were wearing shark hats and the leader was wearing a cute squid hat!\n\nGoing to the Dragon Boat Race was a great experience! I would like to be a steerer! Maybe next year I can be on a dragon boat team. It was so fun watching all of the Dragon boats racing each other. Thank you LaJaJa Kids! I have learned a ton!\n\n   \n\n\n\n2016 Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival\nby Ryan Lin\n\n\n\nOn July 31\, 2016\, three junior journalist\, Kyran\, Jaslyne\, and I\, went to the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival. There were over 200 teams racing in this event. We interviewed team captains\, asking about the competition and their experience. We even got to learn how to paddle the dragon boat!\n\nThe first team we interview was the UCSD team. Before the interview\, we learned how to paddle. The first step was to stick out your arm and hold the top of the paddle firm. Then\, you pulled your paddle down in the water while turning your body. You keep repeating the pattern while following the captain's timing. If he goes faster\, you go faster. This made the team paddle together. Every weekend they practice in Long Beach with the whole entire team. They get a boat out and practice like they are actually racing in a competition.\n\n\n\nThere are important requirements to row on a team. The two most important ones are timing and having a good team. There are 20 people on a boat\, paddling at the same time\, which require good timing. Also everyone needs to use the same stroke and same power. If one person makes a mistake\, it throws the whole team off. Three important words for the Dragon Boat Race are endurance\, timing\, and speed. It is important to practice every week to make a good team. The teams could not bring their own dragon boat\, so they each got a dragon boat from the festival.\n\nThe next team we interviewed was from Trinidad and Tobago. It is a country in the Caribbean Island. They practice in the rough waves of the ocean\, which makes it harder to paddle. The team has been to many international competitions. They have been to Long Beach\, Canada\, Florida\, and Hungry. They Competed in the women's rowing finals\, figuring they had more. As well as the 200 meter race and the mix events.\nThe growth of the Dragon Boat sport in expanding. There were so much interesting facts and Chinese culture I learned out there today. My right arm was sore after five minutes paddling. I can’t imagine entire team have been paddling for six hours every weekend. There were many creative and colorful boat paddling the river. Next year I hope to create my own team for a dragon boat race. 明年再见!\n\n

Kids’ Carpentry offers classes focused on hand tools\, which are easier and safer for little ones. Refreshing\, right?\n\nBest For: Bright kids who love logic games or math\, or kids who need a lot of structure. “When somebody runs at you with a sword\, you will learn focus no matter what\,” says Julia Richey\, a fencing instructor at Royal Arts Sport Fencing Academy\, in Columbus\, Ohio.\n\nWhat They'll Do: Choose their weapon: either a foil\, a saber\, or an épée. (Each appeals to different personalities\, so it’s like Harry Potter in Ollivander’s Wand Shop.) Then they’ll learn lunges\, thrusts\, parries\, and more before facing off against a partner.\n\nWhy Kids Love It: It’s sword fighting! Like in the movies! And yet it’s surprisingly cerebral. “It’s like being in a real chess game\, and I am one of the pieces\,” says Andrew Silver\, a 9-year-old fencer from New Albany\, Ohio.\n\nFind a Class: Visit Fencing.net.\nRunning a Business\nWhy It's Hot: In today’s economy\, parents see the value of teaching kids 21st-century skills like leadership\, teamwork\, and communication. “Because entrepreneurship is about bringing ideas to life and solving problems\, it equips kids to be leaders and creators\,” explains Thais Rezende\, CEO of BizWorld\, a business education program in San Francisco.\n\nBest For: Team players who don’t mind sharing opinions—entrepreneur class can be highly collaborative.\n\nWhat They'll Do: Launch a real product\, such as pencil cases or friendship bracelets. Once they’ve mastered those\, students practice rolling and turning before trying more advanced skills like ollies. “I can teach any age how to roll and be comfortable in one hour\,” says Ben Kerrigan\, owner of Boston’s Skate Catalyst. “You can navigate skatepark basics in probably six hours or so.”\n\nWhy Kids Love It: Skateboarding offers an acceptable outlet for daredevil kids. And on flat ground\, they can practice for hours by themselves\, a process that builds focus and persistence. “The safest place for children to practice is in their own driveway or at their local skatepark\,” Kerrigan says. Don’t hit the sidewalks until you know how to roll and get off the board safely.\n\nFind a Class: Most programs are local but searchable online. Or ask at a nearby skate shop or your town’s recreation department.\nPlaying In a Rock Band\nWhy It's Hot: Kids have dreamed of becoming rock stars since\, well\, rock was young. To the journalists’ pleasure\, they were able to briefly meet Dalila Bela\, Timothy [Tim] McKeon\, and Adam Peltzman before the screening began.\n\nDalila Bela\, an actress at who will be turning fifteen this year\, plays the leading female role of Agent Olive in Odd Squad. During the screening\, the two journalists were able to interview Dalila to ask her about her acting career and her opinions about the new movie. Here were some of the questions that were asked during the interview:\n\nWhat do you think is the biggest difference between the new Odd Squad movie and the original TV show?\n\nDalila: Well\, in this new movie\, all the members/agents of the Odd Squad actually work TOGETHER to solve a big problem instead of all working on the little problems individually. Even Olive and Otto\, who had gone away to form their own Odd Squad\, came back to help the team defeat the Weird Team.\n\nWhat was the greatest challenge you had to face when acting for Odd Squad?\n\nDalila: Well\, surprisingly\, I didn’t actually encounter a lot of problems while filming\, but I would say that it was very hard for me to wake up early every morning to film\,since I had a leading role. Like\, sometimes\, I just wake up and tell myself: “I really want to go back to sleep.”\n\nWhat were qualities that you really enjoyed about your character?\n\nDalila: One thing I really liked about Agent Olive was that...she was just very determined and confident about herself and she was always trying to focus on making things all right.\n\nHow does working on Odd Squad impact your lifestyle?\n\nDalila: Well\, it was the first time I had ever had a big leading role in a TV show. Like\, I had had experience being the main character before\, but that was just in really short\, few-minute clips. What I’m trying to say is that being Agent Olive helped me get out into the acting world so that i could see what it felt like to have to be the leader of the show.\n\nHow do you think you and Agent Olive are alike?\n\nWell\, one thing is for certain: we both are very determined and confident in ourselves.\n\nAfter the nice interview with “Agent Olive”\, the journalists proceeded to watch a few minutes of the movie until it ended. Afterwards\, they were able to interview Tim McKeon and Adam Peltzman\, the creators of Odd Squad:\n\nWhere did the idea of Odd Squad come from?\n\nTim and Adam: Well\, we wanted a show that would teach kids about math\, but\, at the same time\, we wanted to make it interesting and attractive\, so we added on all that odd stuff to make it more fascinating.\n\nThere are many odd villains and creatures in Odd Squad. How to you find such imaginative ideas?\n\nTim and Adam: Well\, as for the villains\, sometimes we just try to find someone who messes up with math so that we could emphasize the whole “math” part of the show\, and then we just think of the creatures as they come to our mind.\n\nWhy did you choose the jackalope to be the mascot of the Odd Squad?\n\nTim and Adam: Well\, one day\, we were travelling\, and then inside a gift shop we saw a postcard with a jackalope on the front\, so we thought\, Hmm...well\, the jackalope is a mythical creature that doesn’t quite appear in any TV shows. We wanted it to be included just like the all other mythical creatures\, so we made it the mascot of the Odd Squad.\n\nOdd Squad is a show that teaches kids math. Do you intend to create shows that teach kids about science\, english\, or history?\n\nTim and Adam: Why\, we’d LOVE to create such shows\, or maybe we can just add more on to our Odd Squad. After all\, you never know how much Odd Squad can teach you.\n\nTo conclude their visit\, the journalists took a group picture with the creators\, and another one with Dalila. It was most definitely not odd to anyone that both of the journalists had a very good time.\n\n\n\nKyle Chiu\n\n\nOdd Squad Screening Interview\n\nOn August 4th\, 2016\, two Lajaja Kids Junior Journalist went to PBS SoCal in CARECEN and saw an Odd Squad movie screening and interviewed one of the actresses (Dalila Bela) and the creators of Odd Squad; Timothy McKeon and Adam Peltzmen. The first thing we did when we went inside was sign in. There was a prize table where a lot of kids went to take their prizes.\n\nThen we had a practice interview with Timothy McKeon and Adam Peltzmen and here were my questions:\n\nQ: How did you first think of Odd Squad?\n\nA: We thought about how to teach kids things since it will be on the PBS Kids channel and thought of math. Then we thought of things kids would like to see such as dinosaurs\, unicorns\, and other imaginary or impossible things you can’t see. Then\, we tried to put both together into one.\n\nQ: How did you choose people to act for Odd Squad?\n\nA: We had a big tryout for people who wanted to be in Odd Squad and had them to try acting as one of the characters.\n\nQ: Why did you choose the jackalope as the mascot?\n\nA: We chose the jackalope because the jackalope doesn’t show a lot and even though most mascots are something serious\, we wanted our mascot to be a weird and something silly.\n\nThen we ask the interviewed the actress Dalila Bela who played as Agent Olive these questions:\n\nQ: What do you like about your character?\n\nA: Well I like about how she is always getting things right in the right way.\n\nQ: How are you and your character alike?\n\nA: I think me and my character are alike because we both are confident and are always doing things just as I was told.\n\nNext the screening started and we went back to interviewing and started asking questions again. I love this interview and I can’t wait until the next interview.\n\n\n\n
