SUMMARY:Watch the 2017 Rose Parade with our Junior Journalists
\n\n\n\nRose Parade\nBy: Ryan Lin\n\n\n\nOn January 2\, 2018\, Kyran and I went to Pasadena\, California to the Rose Parade for the very first time. This year's theme was "Echoes of Success.” The theme celebrates organizations that helped make other people successful.  This is the 128th annual Rose Parade\, however\, this one is special. According to tradition\, the Rose Parade is never to be held on Sunday. This year\, January 1st fell on a Sunday; therefore\, the parade took place on January 2nd.  The parade was led by the Grand Marshals\, former Olympians Janet Evans\, Allyson Felix\, and Greg Louganis. There were 40 magnificent floats\, splendid equestrian units\, and 19 tuneful marching bands taking place in the parade. The parade was 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard and lasted about three hours. There were decorative police motorcycles doing a show for us. That was really marvelous.\n\n\n\nAll the floats were colorful and impressive\, one of my favorite was the Dole\, Spirt of Hawaii. The bright and the vivid flowers reminded me of being in Hawaii. Another float I liked was the China Airlines\, Return To the Beauty of Taiwan. The float was about endangered species of plants and animals. The float and the theme highlight their nation's accomplishments\, such as protecting the environment and preserving the rare species left in the island nation. Taiwan is a country that I always want to visit again. The next float I liked was the Lucy Pet Gnarly's Crankin' K-9 WaveMaker! It was the largest float this year. It was 125 feet long\, weighed 70 tons and\, was the longest and heaviest float in the Rose Parade history. Also\, there were eight dogs surfing. In particular\, The BDK Singpoli's float caught my attention the most. I just saw the movie last week. The float is called the “The Monkey King: Journey to Success". The float won the parade's "Fantasy" trophy. The focus of the float was being creative\, hard working\, and achieving goals you want. The Monkey king is a mythical figure from a body of legend. The monkey on the float had been made to look animated. The monkey king was 30 feet with two structures holding it up. The monkey's staff shoot fire and had waterfalls surrounding it. It was incredible!\n\n \n\nA marching band I really thrilled to see was the Arcadia Apache High School Band. There are 375 members of the band. They performed at this year's Rose Parade for their 16th time in the past 50 years. When I hear them play\, it was mind-blowing. The band director is Mr. Sherrill. He is also my percussion teacher at Foothills Middle School.\n\nThe weather was pretty decent for the parade-chilly\, but at least the rain held off until the end of parade\, how lucky we were! I really enjoyed the parade. I'll definitely be back for the 2018 Rose Parade!\n\n\n\n\n\nRose Parade\nBy:Kyran Lin\n\nHappy New Years! On January 2\, 2017\, Ryan and I went to the Rose Parade to do a live introduction for La JaJa Kids. It was my first time going to the Rose Parade. I felt nervous and excited at the same time. The 2017 Rose Parade theme is “Echoes of Success”. What's so special about this year's Rose Parade is that it happened on the January 2nd because the Rose parade has had a “Never on Sunday” tradition since 1893. When we arrived\, we went to go find our seats and that's about when the Rose Parade started. The parade marched about 5 miles down Colorado Boulevard. When the parade started there were about 8 police motorcycles do a curving pattern to clear the path.  It was so cool!\n\n \n\nTwo of my favorites floats were the Trader Joe's float\," All Aboard! 50 Years of Serving the Best...” and The BDK Singpoil's float\, “The Monkey King: Journey to Success”  because they were colorful and creative. The Trader Joe's float uses all kinds of food\, like a strawberry propeller and lemon wheels. It reminded me of when I went shopping with my mom at Trader Joe's.  The first car is a time machine\, the second one is a guest of honor table and the last one is a trusty compass so they won’t get lost. The compass is actually an ATV covered in flowers.\n\n\n\nThe BDK Singpoil’s theme is “Journey to Success”. The Monkey King is a famous Chinese classic novel and his real name that the Jade Emperor gave his is Sun Wukong. He was born from a rock. He first misbehaved a lot but he turned out to be good. The monkey king movie and book were both really fantastic.  It was one of my favorites Chinese novel.\n\n\n\nI also had a favorite band from Japan\, called the Gifusho Green Band. Their cheerful songs had me in a good mood at the Parade. They had to travel 8\,884 km to come here and try really hard to accomplish their dreams. Their costumes were gorgeous! I was surprised at how many people they have in the band!\n\n\n\nNot only that they had floats but they had 19 marching bands and equestrian units.  Most of the bands are newcomers. The Rose Parade was led by the Marshall and couple former Olympians\, Allyson Felix\, Greg Louganis\, and Janet Evans. I loved the Rose Parade's floats\, equestrian units\, the marching bands\, and their creative flower designs! After all\, this Rose Parade was a great experience for me. I was thrilled to be here for the 2017 Rose Parade!\n\n

SUMMARY:Junior Journalist at Rose Parade "Monkey King" Float Press Conference
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBDK Singpoli's Float - The Monkey King - Journey to Success\n\n\nby Aaron E.\n\n\n      The 128th Tournament of Roses Parade will take place on Monday\, January 2\, 2017. On Friday\, December 23rd\, my Jr. Journalist friend\, Phoebe\, and I participated in a very fun press conference to see BDK's \, an affiliate of Singpoli Group's Rose Parade Float. I got to see their current float\, and it was awesome! The theme of this year’s Rose Parade is "Echoes of Success". The title of the BDK Singpoli's float is "The Monkey King- Journey to Success." The Monkey King is a good classic movie and book so I would recommend it to anyone. The Monkey King  showed a lot of courage as he journeys to the west with his friends. He was mischievous but becomes a good person. I also really liked the Monkey King’s martial arts demonstration by a real Shaolin Temple master at the press conference.\n\n     We also met a some elected officials and interviewed the Mayor of Pasadena\, Mr. Terry Tornek; the CEO of Singpoli Group\, Mr. Kin Hui; and the owner and creative director of Paradiso\, Mr. Charles Meier. Even though the float is not finished it still looks beautiful. We can see the frame of it and how it is being built. I viewed a video of a previous rose parade float with a dragon which is pretty cool because it spits fire. So I can hardly wait to see the finished Monkey King float in the Rose Parade this year.\n\n     Paradiso is the company who designed the Monkey King Float. They decorates their floats with a lot of different types of flowers from all over the world. Mr. Charles Meier and his team studied some parts story of the Monkey King to design the float. The Monkey King float is my favorite so far. The Monkey king has a staff that lights on fire. I also learned that the Monkey King was a challenge to engineer because it is only supported in two areas: the feet and the hip. The Monkey King was also engineered to look like it is flying and to bend to cross the bridge. The float will also have mini waterfalls.\n\n      The press conference was interesting because it talked about the floats and how everyone is like a family. Mr Kin Hui talked about trust and hard work to be successful. He also says that each employee is more of a partner to him. His company invests in many real estate properties. Another cool experience is that Phoebe and I also interviewed Mr. Terry Tornek\, the mayor of Pasadena. The Tournament of Roses Parade is watched around the globe. He is glad that it takes place in Pasadena.\n\n      My day at BDK Singpoli Group’s press conference was awesome! I hope I get to see the rose parade so I can see their floats. I hope to come see everyone again some day at another press conference. It was really exciting to meet everyone today.  Thank you for your time. Thank you to Lajajakids\, BDK\, Singpoli Group\, Paradiso\, Mayor of Pasadena\, and many others for the opportunity for this interview. Thank you also to Mr. Robert S. Joe\, councilmember of city of South Pasadena for sharing your time and stories  with me after the press conference. Happy Holidays! Hope everyone enjoys the Tournament of Roses Parade this year and especially enjoys the Monkey King Float as much as I will.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRose Parade Float ~~ Monkey King: Journey to Success\nby Phoebe H.\n    When I first entered the float area\, I was like wow this is pretty amazing of what people can make.  I have never seen so gorgeous floats ever!  I thought of how the floats would look after they would be decorated with flowers and painted.  They looked pretty already and awesome.\n     There were a lot of floats\, but one really caught my attention.  It was the Monkey King float.  Of all the years this float looked different because it was a Chinese float.  I was pretty impressed.  Many people have heard of the monkey king.  Last year Kin Hui the owner of the monkey king float won first place!  Every year he always got a different award and was surprised about that.  His company is determined to win this year.  There is a kung fu learner and is going to be the monkey king for the float.  Clearly\, their float might just win the most culturistic float.\n   This year they are most likely to win because they are using a ton of flowers on their float more than any other year.  The Monkey King statue is only supported by its one leg and hip.  There are metal poles that support the monkey’s leg and hip from falling to the ground.  Mr. Hui and his partner/designer William created a group called the BDK.  Mr. Hui treats his workers like friends and not like employees.  Obviously\, Mr. Hui is a very willing guy.\n    The theme for 2017 is a journey to success.  The monkey king is related to that because firstly he is a bad person and the he gets punished by god and has to live under the ugly rocks. Then he has changed a lot and that is successful.  I think the float this year is going to impress the judges and make them very satisfied.\n    The point for the Rose Bowl was to brag to New York and other cold states of how pretty and healthy our flowers looked in the winter.  Because people all over the world look at this\, it is like a tradition nowadays.\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Grit
\n\n亞洲家庭比較強調孩子「應該」做什麼(should do)，而不問孩子「想」做什麼(want to do)。 \n\nＡ：我們根據數千位學生的問卷調查，將九種品格分成三類：\n\n心的力量 （strengths of heart）\n\n感激、意義感、自我控制、情緒智商，屬於「助人」的特質，能正向的與人連結\n\n意志力 （strengths of will） \n\n恆毅力、成長性思惟、樂觀，屬於「去做」的特質，能幫助學生達成目標\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n智慧的力量（strengths of mind）\n\n好奇、自我控制、熱情，屬於「思考」的特質，能促成豐富多元的思考模式\n\n我們希望根據研究成果，研發出學校可使用的教材或內容，目前還在初始階段。 \n
