SUMMARY:Coco - movie review by Junior Journalist Shawn
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHave you seen Coco yet? Our junior journalist Shawn is huge fan and he had a wonderful time enjoying Coco at the theater. Read here for his movie review. \n\n\n\nAbout Coco the movie\n\nCoco is a 2017 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich\, it is directed by Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina. \n \nMovie Review of Coco\nBy: Shawn Lo (age 10)                       \nThe movie Coco is about the miraculous journey of Miguel Rivera\, who is searching for his great\, great grandpa in the land of the dead.  Miguel is a 12-year old boy in Mexico whose greatest desire is to be a musician like his idol Ernesto de La Cruz.  By accident\, Miguel enters the world of the dead and needs his ancestor's blessing to come back.   He also wants his great\, great grandpa to show him how to express joy and emotion through music.  For generations Miguel's family have always thought music was a curse because of his great great grandfather's decision of leaving family for music.\nThe people who help Miguel achieve this goal is his trusted dog\, Donte. Donte is a loyal\, and protective guardian who not only is Miguel's pet but also his guarding angel. Another person who helps Miguel\, is Hector\, a rowdy  boisterous  but cheerful and funny  skeleton. Hector teaches Miguel how to express music\, and how to sing.\n\nWill Miguel be able to come back from the world of the dead? Will he able to find his great\, great grandpa?  The movie Coco is full of wit\, music\, color. It even turns death into an amusement-park ride!   What I also love about this movie is the movie talks about death not with fear but with intimacy.   To Mexicans\, and also to Chinese\, death is sacred.   Many Mexican and Chinese have altars in our homes with candles\, fruits and flours next to the photos of our ancestors.  The film also points out the importance of cherishing our own family members\, especially the elders\, rather than our idols.   This movie is a must see\, and a perfect movie to watch with family.  Just remember to bring tissues!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/xlnPHQ3TLX8\n\n

Yesterday\, me and Jaslyne visited Chill\, in Long Beach as junior journalists. Chill is a 38\,000-square foot ice park. This year\, the theme is international cultural celebrations. Different sections of the park had foods\, decorations and activities from Germany\, Switzerland\, China\, Russia\, Holland\, and the North Pole. Although\, this year there were no ice sculptures in the giant igloo\, there were ice skating\, tubing\, ziplining\, ice tricycles\, and many more fun activities.\n\nWhen we got there\, the red carpet was waiting for us. Since we had a media pass\, we were able to fulfill our mission to interview some stars. I was really excited to meet and interview Loren Gray\, a musically and instagram star\, and ask her about her thoughts on this year’s Chill and her experiences going around the world. She was really nice. Me and Jaslyne also got interview many other stars. \n When we walked into Chill\, we saw a long zipline stretched across the sky\, an ice rink filled with skaters and many bright lights and decorations. The ice rink can lead you to many different attractions and it even went through a small dome with flying acrobats inside. We decided to go on the North pole zipline first\, it was a really tall zipline\, so I was a bit nervous at first but when I started zooming through the air\, I felt ecstatic and it was very enjoyable.\n\nThen\, we went to ice bumper cars\, instead of on land\, it was on ice. It also lighted up with colorful blinking lights. After playing on the bumper cars\, We stopped to rest\, eat and drink at Switzerland and had the best mac and cheese with bacon ever. Next to us\, there were many drink shops that sold hot apple cider and tea\, which painted to look like house in villages of Switzerland. We passed by China\, where there were many red lanterns hanging from the sky and I even took a picture with a panda! After that\, we went tubing down a slope twice. I was really exciting because the tube went down really fast and kept on whirling around and around. \n\nFinally\, we visited Mrs. Claus in here cozy home to get hot chocolate and listen to her stories. Suddenly\, we heard a loud booming sound. We rushed outside and saw different colors of fireworks bursting in the sky\, they looked like they were dancing to the Christmas music that was playing in they background.\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter this day\, I know that I will definitely come back again. I recommend you go on the zipline and bumper cars first because the line is the longest. Then\, while you are skating\, the rink had opening for you to go out for refreshments without returning your skates. Lastly\, for the younger ones you can decorate your own stocking and to have hot chocolate and stories with Mrs. Claus.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJaslyne T (age 11)\n\n\n\n     Imagine a picture perfect scene where people are smiling\, ambling down a cute road lined with cute houses\, or eating delicious food at a cozy cabin. Queen Mary’s CHILL is just the right place to experience this place. The 6 different countries/places create a unique aura that cannot be experienced anywhere else. A good mix of Santa and stockings to the Chinese Shaolin Monks performance and Lion Dance is a great way for kids to learn and have great fun. \n\n     The great activities will keep the family entertained for hours. Fun Christmas music in the background while you are sliding down a hill is truly a unique experience that everyone will enjoy. Going in the bumper cars is a great game for little ones and tweens alike. Even adults can join in the fun! All of the activities mentioned are great for kids AND parents! The zipline is probably the most thrilling and exhilarating activity to do at CHILL. (Especially during the fireworks). It starts as a very high height and you zip down to the earth at a very high speed. It will make your teeth chatter and your heart pump\, but it wasn’t scary after a few seconds. (I recommend for ages 8 and up). But\, this activity isn’t for the people who aren’t too fond of heights. \n\n     The food and drinks were superb. We ate at the Alpine Lodge\, and the Mac & Cheese was amazing! It was cheesy\, and had a hint of spice on the tip of my tongue. It was extremely creamy\, but not overly so. I also drank the onion soup. It was a bit on the salty side\, but I personally liked it. A dash of pepper does the trick\, and it really tastes magnificent. I also suggest to drink the Hot Apple Cider at the Coffee shop. It was sweet\, hot\, and strangely refreshing and all in all a perfect rendition of the drink. But\, at Ms.Claus’s Stories & Drinks\, the hot chocolate is a bit underwhelming. Lacking sweetness and depth\, I wasn’t a fan. \n\n     All in all\, this year’s CHILL was beautiful and a wonderful experience that I loved. The different countries added a wonderful addition to this already fun event. The 38\,000 square foot ice park is a sight not to miss. I definitely suggest all families to go to this event\, as it ends on January 7th. Over winter break is a wonderful time. I hope to see you there!\n\n\n\nMore Info about CHILL at Queen Mary\n\nExperience the 38\,000-square foot ice park honoring international holiday celebrations with authentic beverages and bites from Germany\, Switzerland\, China\, Russia\, Holland\, and the fabled North Pole. Start your foodie expedition at Germany’s Twisted Pretzel Pub & Tasting Room featuring family owned 200-year-old German beer flights for adults and samplings of ginger beer\, butter beer\, and root beer for the wee ones. Delight in traditional German dishes at CHILL’s Brat Haus with cuisines provided by Long Beach’s own Rasselbock Kitchen and Beer Garden\, offering Schnitzel\, Bratwurst\, Kraut\, and more authentic fresh German fare.\n\n\n\n\n\nFamilies can cozy up in Switzerland’s Alpine Patio by roasting marshmallows and building gooey s’mores at the toasty fire pit. Dine in the lower level of the two-story Alpine Lodge at Alpine Cafe\, open nightly\, serving traditional Swiss bites. SUMMARY:Disney on Ice Follow Your Heart ~ our report from Junior Journalists

Actors and actresses glide on ice while singing\, dancing\, telling a story. Although there were many short stories throughout the whole show\, there were four main stories that really stood out: Riley’s story\, Beauty and the Beast\, Finding Dory\, and Let it Go.\n\nIn Riley’s story\, characters from the movie Inside Out appeared\, as well as classical Disney characters Mickey Mouse\, Donald Duck\, and Goofy. Overall\, the performance was very realistic\, the dialogue was clear\, and the storyline was easy to follow. The beautiful lights really set the atmosphere and made the performance even more spectacular. Miniature stories inside of Riley’s own story added some fun and excitement to the story. The costumes of the performing characters were very detailed and realistic\, and added a little extra to the performance as a whole. At the end of Riley’s story\, all of the viewers were taught a very valuable and powerful lesson: just be yourself.\n\n \n\nThe next performance was Beauty and the Beast\, featuring Belle\, a beautiful young woman\, and the Beast\, a misunderstood man. The costumes of both Belle and the Beast were really realistic\, and almost identical to how they appeared in the movie\, which made the experience a lot more fun and interesting. The dialogue\, dance\, and gestures that the performers made were filled with emotion and made the story easy to follow. The dancing and songs were the most spectacular part. The choreographed leaps and twirls were mesmerizing and breathtaking to watch.\n\nAfter Beauty and the Beast\, performers in fish costumes took the stage. They performed the sequel of a Disney classic\, Finding Dory. There wasn’t much singing throughout the performance\, but the spectacular costumes and props made up for that. They were unbelievably realistic\, and brought the characters to life. Another thing that caught my attention was the subtle humor that the character displayed throughout the performance. It really made the show fun and exciting to watch.\n\nLastly\, a few very talented actors and actresses performed songs and scenes from the popular Disney movie\, Frozen. The songs and characters were pretty much identical to the ones from the movie\, and it was very enjoyable to watch the performers sing the popular songs that have touched so many people’s hearts over the years. The most spectacular thing throughout the performance was when beautiful icicles and realistic snow lowered from the ceiling. These details helped make the whole performance feel magical. At the end the the Frozen performance\, viewers came away with a very important lesson: love conquers all.\n\nIn conclusion\, the Disney On Ice show was very enjoyable to watch. The actors and actresses did a good job of making characters come to life. Spectacular acting and ice skating skills made the performance breathtaking. The costumes\, props\, and lights were magical\, and the familiar characters brought back happy childhood memories as well as a deeper understanding of the performance. All in all\, the show was amazing\, and I would definitely see it again if I had the chance.\n\nhttps://youtu.be/0owgSOEydi8\nRyan L (age 9)\nHello Disney Fans!  Bundle up and come watch Disney On Ice "Follow Your Heart" performance this holiday.\n\nDisney On Ice takes you through a magical adventure with performances you won't believe.!  There is definitely a little of everything for everyone\, including Mickey\, Minnie\, Goofy\, Donald Duck\, and all these other princesses.  The main stories performed in the show include  Beauty and the Beast\, Inside Out\, Finding Dory\, and Frozen.    Each story has its own unique stage set which is amazing.   During the Frozen show\, you get to experience the cold temperature and weather.  My favorite performance in Disney On Ice is Finding Dory because it is one of my favorite movies.  Dory is Nemo's buddy who is very forgetful.  Finding Dory sets on an adventure of finding Dory's lost parents.  The most interesting part for me to watch are these amazing performers doing awesome stunts on ice.   They fly\, jump\, and flip which is really cool.\n\nThe magical wonders of Disney On Ice arrives in Southern California on December 14 in Staples Center and moves its way to Anaheim's Honda Center\, Long Beach Arena\, and Ontario's Citizen Business Bank Arena.  Hurry\, check the performing schedule and get your ticket today!.\n\n \n   \n\n\n

\n\nhttps://youtu.be/ui918IZx9nE\nCan you imagine college already mostly paid for? Well\, Scholarshare 529 allows you to do just that. Scholarshare 529 is one of the nation’s top performing college savings plans and the new program is used to help low- and moderate- income California families to jump-start saving for college. This Matching Grant Program helps families open a college savings account and counter rising tuition costs\, one of the most significant obstacles to securing a higher education. According to State Treasurer John Chiang\, chair of the ScholarShare Investment Board\, “The wealth gap in our country is the widest it has been in 40 years and the ability to afford higher education is becoming increasingly difficult for low-  and moderate-income California Families.”\n    On December 6\, 2017\, at the California Science Center\, a group of 5th graders gathered together and were inspired by Treasurer Chiang by shooting for the stars just like the spaceship Endeavor right behind Mr. Chiang. “Instead of just putting money for certain types of ads\, we wanted families to have that money and to build good financial habits by investing as frequently as they can\, to set aside those dollars so that they can gather investment earnings so that when the young children become young adults and they go off to college\, they can focus on studies and the college experience.” At the end of the interview\, Treasurer Chiang stated that he is running for California governor in 2018. \n\nJunior journalist Matt attended ScholarShare California's 529 College Savings Plan Press Conference at California State Treasurer John Chiang announces the launch of its Match Grant Program to benefit more families and enable more kids to pursue their dreams\n\n

SUMMARY:Junior Journalist at "Jade Pendant" Movie Premiere
還與 Fresh off the Boat 三位小童星 Hudson Yang、Forrest Wheeler、Ian Chen 喜相逢，好開心喔！ \n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/v6jNeLjXI5I\n\nThe Story line ~\n\nPeony - A vibrant and beautiful girl raised in China by her widower father. He taught her reading\, calligraphy\, painting and kung fu. At age four\, she resisted foot-binding. At 16\, she rejected an arranged marriage; repulsed rape attempts in Hong Kong by her uncle; and signed on as a domestic to a brothel in San Francisco for five years. She sent the $200 advance stipend to her sick father. This is a story of Peony's determination to control her own destiny against great odds. The mystic jade pendant - Peony's grandmother gave her the heirloom pendant saying\, "Keep it with you at all times. It will protect you and give you wisdom." Frank Michaels\, unintentionally snatched the pendant from Peony during the 1871 Chinatown Massacre. He kept the pendant as his surrogate mistress for 52 years. In 1923\, he returned it to her husband Tom Wong who brought it to her grave in a very surreal encounter. Frank desperately needed absolution for his participation in the Massacre before he dies. During Peony's short life\, three Chinese men and Frank were infatuated with her. She loved Tom dearly. Their life together was short but his love for her was unceasing.\n\n\n\n[caption id="attachment_53871" align="alignnone" width="590"] photo: wapow[/caption]\n\n[caption id="attachment_53870" align="alignnone" width="400"] 男主角 高以翔 與 導演 梁普智 photo: nextshark.com[/caption]\n\n[caption id="attachment_53865" align="alignnone" width="590"] 與 Fresh off the Boat 三位小童星 Hudson Yang、Forrest Wheeler、Ian Chen 喜相逢[/caption]\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReview: The Jade Pendant\nby Karen Shi\n\nFirst of all\, I would not recommend certain parts of this film to younger audiences. There were a few explicit scenes and some violence distributed throughout the movie. However\, the chemistry between Peony (played by Clara Lee) and Tom Wong (played by Godfrey Gao) was very visible and I could almost feel it in the theater as I watched it. The movie makes you\, gasp\, wince\, and jump at all the right times as the storyline progresses with a crescendo and the conflict develops further. It’s hard not to cheer when Peony stabs her dagger a final time into Yu Hing\, an antagonist played by Tzi Ma. But it’s also a heartbreaking sight to see as Tom carries the unliving body of Peony out of the building near the end of the movie\, which quickly turns to sorrow and sympathy when the movie fast forwards to three generations later\, where Tom\, now a grandfather\, visits Peony at her gravestone with his family. The massacre of 18 Chinese immigrants in Los Angeles was portrayed in a very convincing scene\, you could practically feel the pain of the people as they were hung\, burned or shot with guns. \n\nYet\, the film is not all blood\, sweat and tears. It is accessorized with little bits of humor here and there. For example\, when Tom reaches in his bag to pull something out\, Peony leans towards him\, and when Tom turns his head back Peony snaps back into her original\, solemn pose. And we can’t forget the romance that begins the moment Peony and Tom meet while catching a thief on the streets not too long from when Peony first arrived to become a “Flower Princess” in America with her friend Lily. \n\nOverall\, The Jade Pendant portrayed the events of the execution of Chinese immigrants in California in 1871 as a tragic love story in a humorous yet heartbreaking way. It’s completely one-of-a-kind. It teaches Asians born Americans to stand up for themselves or ignore them if one ever accuses them of not being Americans. This 106 minute long film is certainly one to be remembered.
