Educators
\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAquarium of the Pacific\n\nAddress: 100 Aquarium Way\, Long Beach\, CA 90802\n\n\n\n\nOpened: June 20\, 1998\n\nHours: 9am~6pm (weekdays); 9am~8pm (weekends)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite: www.aquariumofpacific.org\n\n\n\n\n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5L-SrQ7u-c&t=32s[/embed]\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKyran Lin (10)\nGlup...Glup...Glup. On August 12\, Karen\, Isabel\, and I went to the Aquarium of the Pacific located in Long Beach\, California to interview….fish? When I was in fifth grade\, I took a field trip here. I had a blast! The biggest change from when I left was the remodel. They were changing the theme to Pacific Visions\, a new opening at the Aquarium of the Pacific.\n\nWhen we first walked in\, The changes amazed me. The remodel\, the new exhibits\, and new sea animals! At first\, we were wandering around when t  hen the Ocean Science Center opened up. The show was about our radioactive planet. I never knew that our planet was radioactive! As we left\, this is was when we found Elliot\, the educator. When we interviewed him\, he took us to the Education Center. This also brought back memories from the field trip. We also got touched the sea anemones and the starfishes.\nAfter we interviewed him\, we went to the Northern Pacific Gallery. The exhibit was filled with jellyfish\, sea otters\, fish\, and other sea animals. The main exhibit that everyone was absorbed around was the sea otters. We were learning about sea otters’ habitat\, eating habits\, and conservation issues. Otters were doing tricks like backflips and flip turns during the show. After the show\, we interviewed the otter trainer\, Amy. All the trainers and volunteers are very passionate about conserve of sea life.\nSoon after that\, we explored every corner of the museum\, we decided to head outside. The outdoor area included the Lorikeet forest\, a stage\, and the shark lagoon. We headed straight towards the shark lagoon. The touching pool inside shark lagoon have bamboo sharks\, epaulette sharks\, fiddler rays\, and cownose rays. All the kids were so excited to touch a shark in person. This was also probably one of my favorite exhibits too! It was even more crowded than the otter show.\nAt the end of the day\, I learned a lot of new things about sea life. This interview experience changed my perspective of sea animals. I’m really excited to come back and see the new remodel!\n\n[caption id="attachment_63099" align="alignnone" width="590"] Kyran and his aquatic friends[/caption]\nKaren Shi (13)\nLong Beach is a great place to go if you live in California\, or if you’re coming here for vacation. But alongside the sandy beach and exquisite food\, the coastal city is also home to more than eleven thousand sea creatures. From sharks to starfish to sea anemone\, the Aquarium of the Pacific has it all. Right away\, you would notice the beautiful fountain in front of the aquarium’s entrance. My journey through the Pacific Ocean last week started there.\n\nWe entered the aquarium and just stood there; Isabel\, Kyran\, Ryan\, and I; admiring the enormous whale statue hanging from the sky-high ceiling. Our mission was to learn more about the aquarium through the people there. After touring around the Southern California and Baja Gallery\, the Tropical Pacific Gallery\, and the Northern Pacific gallery\, we headed outdoors to see the shark exhibit.\n\nI asked some young children on their thoughts and feelings about the aquarium. Many of them absolutely loved the shark exhibition\, a hands-on experience outdoors where they could touch small\, harmless sharks with two fingers.\n\nThere are more than 600 volunteers at the Aquarium of the Pacific\, and because the shark exhibition was so popular\, I asked Joshua\, a volunteer at the booth\, a little about his job. He is part of the educational program\, promoting awareness about sharks. He also makes schedules for some of the other workers at the aquarium.\n\nOverall\, my experience at the Aquarium of the Pacific was great. Be one of the 1.5 million people that visit the aquarium each year! The 20th anniversary of the aquarium is on August 30th. Be sure to check it out! I had so much fun there. The underwater world is totally a “must - sea.”\n\n[caption id="attachment_63100" align="alignnone" width="589"] Junior journalists Karen and Isabel[/caption]\nIsabel Lau (13)\nOceans make up much of planet Earth. At one point or another\, most have gained an interest in the topic of the ocean and what lies in it. At the Aquarium of the Pacific\, there is so much knowledge you can gain. It’s also plenty of fun\, good for adults and children! \n\nFour of the junior journalists\, I myself included\, went to the Aquarium of the Pacific and learned a lot there while having tons of fun! Right outside of the Aquarium stood a gorgeous fountain that had two dolphins jumping as a design. I also observed the few schoolbuses and many children lining up\, ready for a fun\, educational day at the Aquarium. We entered the building to find a wondrous interior. On the right\, a tall diving display stood\, and looked so beautiful when the sunlight seeped through. The diver was splendid\, showcasing epic skills that attracted much attention from the visitors. Hanging above the crowd was a giant replica of a blue whale of the same size. It was spectacular. People crowded the walkways\, upstairs and downstairs\, buzzing with excitement to see their favorite animals. \n\nThe four of us first attended a spinning globe projection show\, called Our Water Future\, which discussed the environmental issues being inflicted on planet Earth today\, and how if we don’t find a way to fix these issues\, there will be atrocious consequences for the inhabitants of this world to suffer. The show truly opened my eyes and made me much more aware of environmental problems that the world is facing currently\, including trash waste and water conservation. As we explored the aquarium a bit more\, I noticed how dedicated this place was to saving our environment. There were a number of plaques to read that displayed information about our world. We then scored an interview with an educator at the museum whose name was Eliot Freutel. He disclosed some information about his time working at the aquarium and along with the other interviewees\, told us about how friendly the work environment is\, and that they all have a common goal: to protect our habitat. \n\nAfterwards\, we visited some more exhibits including the Shark Lagoon and Frogs: Dazzling and Disappearing\, with various creatures including stingray\, fish\, sharks\, frogs\, and more. We then proceeded to the sea otter feeding\, where we met Amy Peterson\, an educator and interpreter at the Aquarium of the Pacific. She has worked especially with sea otters\, and says that the experience is wonderful. Working with animals is much different than working with humans\, and has its ups and downs. After wrapping up our brief chat with Amy\, we headed out to the Harbor Terrace.\n\nThe Harbor Terrace is a popular place for little children especially\, as there are some fun water springs\, musicals are held\, and you can touch the sharks and have a full on interaction with them. We approached Joshua\, a teen helper at the Aquarium of the Pacific and proceeded to ask him questions about his experience at the aquarium. After a lovely conversation with him\, we found some young children and asked them about the aquarium and their favorite animals. Their answers were so adorable!\n\nWith that\, we concluded our trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific. It was educational\, fun\, and a great experience overall. I highly recommend you go and check it out. It has various different events you can check out\, be sure you don’t miss it! Make sure to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach!\n\n

Part 2
\n#遊歷分享\nLava Tube\nhttps://www.hikespeak.com/trails/lava-tube-mojave/\n\nSand Dunes\nhttps://www.hikespeak.com/…/kelso-dunes-in-mojave-national…/\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

By facing off discrimination\, difficult employment\, and obstacles resulting from racial issues in the 19th and 20th century\, immigrants from the Eastern world were able to establish their cultures and their own society right here in Los Angeles. Gathering relics\, manuscripts\, and priceless knowledge from the past\, the Chinese American Museum in Downtown\, LA serves as a doorway into the past leading visitors into a story beginning in the late 19th century about the early struggles of Chinese immigrants setting foot on Californian soil and founding the infamous Chinatown\, which became the foundation for centuries of Asian American development and expansion of the ethnic group throughout the city.\n\nFrom the contents of the museum to the location\, every aspect of the structure is chosen to reflect Asian American History. “We’re on a very historical site\,” says CAMLA docent Janelle Sangalang\, making note of the fact that the floorboards featured in a couple of the exhibit rooms around the museum were the original floorboards of the building\, dating back to the 1890s and the mass immigration of Asian citizens into the United States. “The museum is built on the space where the history was happening”\, Janelle remarks. Displayed in one of the vacant lots is a life size replica of an antique Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture center\, located directly across from a 19th century Chinese convenience store in America complete with resurrected artifacts from the original site\, including robes\, medicine samples\, and accessories.\n\nAs a recent development to the museum’s third floor\, CAMLA has decided to temporarily showcase their new exhibit\, Don’t Believe the Hype: LA Asian Americans in Hip Hop\, a display dedicated to teaching its audience about the contributions of Asian Americans towards the evolution of hip hop through the four pillars of hip hop: MCing\, turntablism\, dancing\, and graffiti art. “Our museum decided that we wanted to do something rather different\, and hip hop is sort of different\, so we decided to choose hip hop as our theme\,” Ms. Sangalang explains. One of the most hit sections of the exhibition includes an interactive screen where visitors are treated to a visual representation of their own motion illustrated as colored streaks as they are given the opportunity to enjoy themselves by dancing to excitable hip hop music. By stepping to the center of the dance floor\, guests will activate a motion sensor\, instantly transforming the room into a musical dance-ground. At this time\, any detected motion from the center of the room will be transferred onto a projected screen as moving beams of either blue\, pink\, orange\, or yellow. “This exhibit has actually been an idea since 2013\, and it’s been five years\, so we are extremely excited to open it up to public\,” Janelle mentions.\n\nAs visitors enter the second room featured in Don’t Believe the Hype\, they will notice a handful of murals adorning the walls\, which reflect upon the graffiti art facet of hip hop culture. Among these is a noteworthy piece of art conjured on multiple sheets of canvas cloth depicting the furious face of a shark hidden amidst a stormy setting. Partially obscured by a net of barbed wire\, the piece leaves its admirers wondering whether fish itself is being protected by the fence\, or its audience. Among these artistic pieces includes a painting on the wall depicting a slogan by a South Indian hip hop artist\, thus providing insight into South Indian culture’s role in hip hop despite usually being overshadowed by that of Chinese Americans and more well-known Asian cultures.\n\nYou want to be provided with first-hand experience regarding the history of Chinese Americans in Los Angeles? If so\, the Chinese American Museum is definitely the place for you to visit. You enjoy hip hop culture? That’s even better. It is indubitable that a trip to CAMLA is definitely worth your time\, especially while its hit exhibit\, Don’t Believe the Hype\, is still available to public audience.\nChinese American Museum Interview\nby Kyran Lin\nDuring 1869\, about 1\, 868\, 4\,000 chinese people came to the United States to work on the Transcontinental Railroad. Year after year\, the population of Chinese grew.Soon\, they were known as Chinese American. The old Gainer building was turned into the Chinese American Museum. Kyle\, Bianca\, and I went to the Museum in Los Angeles to interview Janelle Sangalang\, Coordinator of Programs and Education. The museum recently had just opened a new exhibit\, Don’t Believe the Hype.\n\nWe first were taken for a tour of the three floor museum. Our tour guide was also  Janelle. The first floor was mainly about the time when the Chinese American just moved to the US. They showed a herb shop and and an example of what they would sell in a general store . In the herb shop\, they showed what herbs they would use to heal pains\, and what we use now. For example\, to heal back pain some people use Bengay\, but back then\, Chinese Americans used a herb called Nui Xi\, a species of flowers.\n\nThen second floor was a completely different. It explained the time after the chinese got kicked out\, then moved to the “new” Chinatown. It showed many of the contributions they made. It showed many of their clothing\, items\, and instruments. What surprised me was that they had souvenirs back then\, like backscratchers\, tin cans\, and tea cups. Many of the items they still sell today. The Chinatown is located next to the Museum and is still very busy today.\n\nThe last exhibit\, and my favorite\, Don’t Believe the Hype. It is about hip pop\, art\, and music. They showed paintings\, graffiti\, and music. They had a special room which was for hip pop and dancing. It was a projector. If you moved under it\, it would show up on the screen. This was also very fun and interesting.    This exhibit was created by Ninochka McTaggart and many other people. They had more than 15 artist work on the exhibit! The exhibit is going to have live performance.\nI think this interview was a great opportunity to learn about Chinese American History. I really enjoyed going to the museum and I hope I can come back to see the new exhibits that will come out! The museum partnered up with El Pueblo Monument\, which is a very big place full of fun activities and things to eat. They have a market next to the Historic Los Angeles Plaza. This is a exciting place to spend a day at!\nMy Tour at the Chinese American Museum\nby Kyle Chiu\nDuring my experience at the new exhibit\, "Can't Believe the Hype" at the Chinese American Museum\, I was able to learn about many new and fascinating things about hip hop and how Asian Americans influenced it. On July 23\, 2018\, two La jaja journalist and I went to the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles. Guided by the docent of the exhibit\, Janelle Sangalong\, we were able to receive a full tour of the museum\, including to have an interview talk with her regarding the museum's latest exhibit\, "Don't Believe the Hype"\, who she explains that the museum had already wanted to have the exhibit in order to teach younger visitors about how to be free with music and art and as well as to try a new type of theme ever since 2013. We toured the three stories\, and we were able to see the artifacts and descriptions for them and different articles that changed or explained the Chinese American history. This included objects such as maps\, trophies\, Chinese souvenirs\, tours\, food\, bottles\, newspapers\, and much more. During the tour\, we were also able to experience the exhibit\, "Can't Believe the Hype"\, and which showed a selection of references that were used to teach visitors of the museum about the influences that Asian Americans did to hip hop to shape it. This tour was able to teach me much about the influences that Asian Americans have done to carve hip hop to how it is today.
～\n\nhttps://youtu.be/_AHNxyl5oS4\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\nCarissa Yu (age 11)\nHave you ever been on a real submarine?  My name is Carissa Yu.  I just went to Legoland to ride on their newest ride\, Deep Sea Adventure Submarine.  I got to go on a real submarine\, see sea animals such as sharks\, stingrays\, and different types of fish\, and even helped the lego minifigure team search for treasure! Even though I had to drag myself out of bed at 7:00 am on a summer morning\, I was really excited because I would be one of the first guests to go onto the new ride at Legoland. \n \n Legoland invited children and their families from the Ronald McDonald House Charities to ride on this new ride also.  Right before that grand opening of the Deep Sea Adventure Submarine\, there was a check presentation where LEGOLAND donated $80\,000 to help the Ronald McDonald House Charities.  My mom worked at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles before and she told me how Ronald Mcdonald House helps children in the hospital stay close to their families and the resources they need. \n    \nUpon arrival\, I was given a sailor’s hat\, which made me feel like I was going on a real special voyage. The representatives of the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Mr. Peter Ronchetti\, the general manager of the Legoland Resort\, each holding a bottle of champagne made of Lego\, which they popped and out went flying pieces of colorful confetti.   Long strands of blue and Silver streamers were launched into the air in celebration. The Lego City: Deep Sea Adventure Submarine Ride was officially opened!  A diver came out and told the captain that the treasure fell back down into the sea.  Therefore\, the captain asked all the children there to help him find the treasure.\n \n Before boarding the submarine\, I was able to interview Marie Collins\, who is a sea life expert in charge of all the sea animals on the submarine ride. During the interview\, she told me that all the animals on the ride were from Australia. I also asked her will the submarine accidentally hurt the animals and she replied\, ”No\, they move very slowly and the animals treat the submarine just like another animal. The sea creatures in the tank are not stressed out or scared by the submarines at all. Miss. Collins also said her favorite animal to work with is the octopus. She says they are actually more intelligent than some birds and can even open jars and boxes.\n \nI was also able to ask Captain Phillip what his favorite part of the submarine ride was. He says his favorite part of the submarine is the bubbles rising upwards when emerging into the deep sea. I asked him what is so unique about the ride and he responded\, “Many people’s only interaction with a sub is at a sandwich shop. But here you have an actual opportunity to get inside a vessel with eleven of your closest friends or perfect strangers to see many species and retrieve treasures.”\n \nWhen I finally go onto one of the eight submarines\, I saw lots of different and colorful fish. Stingrays and sharks glided smoothly along the side of the submarine. Above the windows\, every person had an interactive screen\, where if you found Lego gems\, coins\, swords and even paintings\, you could use the screen to help the divers collect the treasure. Among the fish\, there were also other sea creatures\, all made out of Lego! Don’t forget to look for my favorite\, the purple octopus!\n\n\n\n[caption id="attachment_61385" align="alignnone" width="590"] LEGO® City Deep Sea Adventure submarine ride grand opening on Monday\, July 2\, 2018 at Legoland California.(Photo by Sandy Huffaker/Legoland)[/caption]\n\n\n\n\n

\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWRVy-i2MUA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nShawn  Lo (11)\nWhat business supplies healthy\, and tasty food at the same time? Located in the heart of Pasadena\, Chef Box provides all kinds of meals from sweets and delicious brownies to gourmet and healthy dishes. A few days ago\, I got to interview the owners of Chef Box\, Albert Chu\, and Patricia Huang. I enjoyed talking to them\, and was interested about their business. I learned that Chef Box provides a variety of foods for different kinds of customers. \n What is Chef Box? Chef Box is a company found by Albert Chu\, and Patricia Huang\, the team members behind 626 Night Market. Chef box provides easy access of delicious meals that lets you grab and go. Chef Box’s meals are made by local chefs\, each with a unique style of cooking. Using the freshest ingredients\, these chefs prepared different meals packaged in bento-box like containers. They are then sent to Chef Box to be sold to hungry customers. Chef Box meals are categorized by culture\, taste\, and also nutrition. There is definitely something for everyone. During my interview with Patricia\, and Albert\, they showed me different types of meals and highlighted some of the preparation techniques\, which made me so hungry! When my mom asked me to choose a few boxes to take home\, it was hard for me to decide. They all looked so appetizing! \n During my interview\, I learned that Patricia\, and Albert worked their way up\, and started working for an innovative company first before they created Chef Box. 626 Night Market is an example of what they did before Chef Box. Working on the 626 Night Market Project\, they learned a lot so that they wouldn’t make the same mistakes. Their experiences working with different vendors and different types of foods also helped them to launch this new company. \n I think that Chef Box is a success\, and a good place to eat . What I like about Chef Box is that it can provide a healthy balanced diet for my family. It is one of the few companies that serve delicious and nutritious meals instead of fast food you see\, and taste all the time. What I also like about Chef Box is its people. I admire Albert and Patricia for their entrepreneur spirit. Both are creative\, hardworking\, and driven. Combined with the talents of local chefs\, they help satisfy the needs of busy customers who don’t have time to cook\, but want good foods for themselves and their family. \n In conclusion\, I think Chef Box is a successful and profitable business\, because of its meal quality\, menu diversity\, and convenience. Chef Box is also a success because of its friendly staffs and innovative founders. If you pass by Chef Box located on Fair Oaks Ave in South Pasadena\, be sure to pick up some meals for you and your family! \nJaslyne Tam (12)\n Imagine this. You are at work and you need something quick\, nutritious\, and yummy to eat. If you eat at a sit-down restaurant\, it will take too long. But if you eat fast food\, it will be unhealthy and it might not taste good. What can you do? In South Pasadena\, there is a store to solve this dilemma. Chef Box is a storefront where customers can buy pre-prepared boxed meals created by local chefs. The meals are nutritious and delicious with food ranging from a Hearty Turkey Lasagna to Vegan “Meatballs”.  Recently\, fellow Junior Journalist Shawn and I were able to sit down and interview the creators of Chef Box\, Albert Chu and Patricia Huang. \n Albert and Patricia are some of the creators of the infamous 626 Night Market. According to their website\, “After identifying a gap in the to-go meal options market in Southern California\, the duo came up with the idea of matching top-quality local culinary talent and hungry consumers with a straight-forward\, efficient storefront concept.” Interviewing them\, they told me similar ideas as what was on their website. \n They also stated that they noticed how much people enjoyed the diversity\, convenience\, and taste of the 626 Market food. This led them to want to create a “brick-and-mortar” version of the market. Albert and Patricia also told us that the night market had also helped them when working with food vendors. Chef Box has real chefs from other restaurants making the food\, and 626 Night Market has different vendors from separate locations selling food. They shared that working with vendors helped them to work work the chefs in Chef Box. \n When I walked into Chef Box\, I was a little confused. There wasn’t a clear distinction of what Chef Box was and how it worked. Since I read the website\, I knew what Chef Box was about. But just a passerby would not know what Chef Box was. But as I looked around I began to understand. If you would like to go to Chef Box\, make sure to take a look at the website first. \n Now I bet you are thinking\, “How can you have a write up of Chef Box if you haven’t eaten the food yet?” But while Albert was showing us the collection of Chef Boxes\, I was intrigued by some of the food. We ended up purchasing dinner for my entire family. The selection of food we bought included a Tuscan Farro Soup\, a Chicken meal\, and a delicious brownie. After tasting this food\, I definitely recommend these meals\, if not every other box meal as well. \n In summary\, Chef Box is a wonderful on-the-go food service and I recommend going to check them out. Interviewing Patricia and Albert was also very enjoyable and educational\, and I learned a lot about Chef Box.

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima 的 Flag Raising Over Irvine Bowl，視覺效果非常強烈，讓人印象深刻。 \n\n每年 Pageant of The Masters 表演的畫作都不相同，今年的主題是 Under the Sun，兩位小記者已經約好了 7 月 7 日開演後一定要來看秀，不見不散！\n\nhttps://youtu.be/EBShDCBLWaY\n\n\n\n《大師畫中人》名畫真人秀\nPageant of the Masters at Festival of the Arts\nDates：Jul 7 – Sept 1\, 2018\n\nNightly: 8:30 pm\n\nLocation：650 Laguna Canyon Rd\, Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 [map]\n\nTicket：$25－$272\n\nWebsite: https://www.foapom.com/\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReport from our Junior Journalists\n\nAngeline Nim (age 14)\n\nIngram Chen (age 11)\n\n\nThe Pageant of Masters has a lot of art\, food\, and activities to play and do. When you get there\, it may not seem like much\, but once you see how things are done\, it is very magical. While your there\, you can have chocolate or (if your 18) wine. All there is so much more to know. Let me tell you about it. \n Pageant of the Masters has a lot of paintings. This time\, we see how the artists paint the stage background which is as big as an office wall. Surprisingly\, artists can finish such a gigantic background painting in two weeks! Let me tell you one of these beautiful background. This background has a slanted floor where the actor has to posed steadily without any movement. How can the actor stand still without falling off? The paintings have a piece of handle mounted on and the actors waist belt can lock securely\, then they could stay there without falling off the stage. Some artists paint paintings\, others make the props. Some props may look like they are made of metal\, but if you look closely or touch it\, it’s actually made of foam. They magically turn foam to all kinds of things so they don’t have to buy expensive pieces of metal! They can just shape it and cut it to the right shape.\n Have you ever wondered about how the clothes were made? The clothes are still made of your everyday fabric\, but the actresses may have to wear wigs or hats. Some of the clothing may not be needed\, depending on the theme. This year’s theme is “Under the Sun”. The clothing is not bought\, but handmade. Basically everything is handmade by people. The Pageant of the Masters has celebrated its 86th anniversary. The festival shows beautiful paintings. Everywhere has something amazing to see.\nWe have the honor to see the preview of the show. I personally enjoyed the show because the people would stay still as if they were part of  the real painting. If you have time you should go watch it. Many people hope for this to attract future generations. The place is beautiful. Everywhere you look\, you will see beautiful things.\n\n\n\n\n\nDoria Chen (age 9)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6fg95StXm0
