This is the reason why I jumped at the opportunity to meet Cassandra Hsiao\, who was once a Junior Journalist as well.\n\n Cassandra is one of the most interesting people I have met. It’s not just the Gracie Award that she recently achieved or the fact that she has amazed Lin Manuel Miranda\, playwright for Disney’s recent hit movie Moana.\n\n It’s her amazing personality. She’s practical and humorous at just the right times. She knows how to handle a conversation. And she’s not nerve-wracking to communicate with. Cassandra Hsiao is adequate at journalism. And she started her career as a junior journalist\, just like me. I think by following some of her footsteps a lot of kids like me can become more successful in their lives too.\n\n At age eleven she began interviewing celebrities like Justin Bieber for the educational newspaper scholastic. Right from the start\, her manner was very straightforward and it was easy to understand the main idea in her questions. She makes a great film critic. Cassandra is also a playwright and storyteller.\n\n She’s a fangirl too\, of fandoms like Marvel. She said she would love to interview Chris Evans\, who played Captain America in Marvel’s Avengers. Cassandra said she doesn’t really do research on her favorite stars\, but she watches their past productions. Somehow she manages to keep family\, school\, work and play all in balance. “Sometimes you have to decide which choice is best for you\,” she told me. For her\, family is the always the first priority.\n\n Cassandra advises for all journalists to stay away from typical red carpet questions like ‘who are you wearing?’ Because when interviewing a celebrity\, they should be credited for their work. Their designers are a different matter. She tries to find a unique question\, something most people won’t think of asking but is interesting at the same time.\n\nI think I’ve learned a lot from her. How to act in an interview\, how to prepare\, and even a little on how to organize my life. I think she is a really inspirational figure\, and she is a great role model for blossoming journalists like me.\n\n\n\nKyran (9)\nOn January 14\, 2017\, three La JaJa Kids journalists\, Jaslyne\, Karen\, and I met at the Suzanne park to interview a talented Journalist\, Cassandra Hsiao. This gifted journalist is a BYOU magazine star reporter\, film critic\, a LA Times journalist\, a poet\, and a playwright. I was so thrilled to meet her. When we were interviewing her\, she had huge smile on her face and answered all the questions we asked. \nWe talked about many interesting subject about her and the conversation led to movies subject. She would describe herself as a fangirl. As a BYOU magazine star reporter she was able to give interviews to a lot of famous people like Justin Bieber and Nick Vujicic. She also mentioned that some of her favorite movies were Captain America\, Rurouni Kenshin\, Peter Pan\, and one of her favorite book series is Alex Rider. She defines success as doing what makes you truly happy. As for her\, the success is following her passion creating stories and telling stories. Her secret is that you don't have to feel obligated to confine yourself into what society says you need to be. For her it's just going after it 100%.\nWhen she started she was totally inexperienced and it took her hours to do her homework. She knows how to handle awkward moments and situations during the interviews and she always has a positive attitude. I need to always work hard and to try my 100% on everything. She is an such inspiration to me! \n\n\n\n\nJaslyne (10)\n     Imagine\, at only 11 years old\, being able to interview Justin Bieber! Well\, Cassandra Hsiao made that dream\, a reality. She signed up to be a Scholastic Journalist which allowed her to interview some amazing people. It’s my dream to be able to interview celebrities like Taylor Swift\, or Leonardo Di Caprio. One day\, I hope to become a Scholastic Journalist like Cassandra to be able to do so too.\n\n     When Karen\, Kyran\, and I went to interview her\, it was amazing to interview someone so inspirational. Interviewing Cassandra was like a dream come true. We knew that Cassandra was much more professional than us\, and I felt nervous that we would be criticized because we had less experience. But\, Cassandra gave us many great tips on how to improve. She told us that we should always research before an interview. Also\, to try to find out the most you can about the interviewee to ask the most interesting questions. Did you know that Cassandra also is a movie critic? Her favorite movie is The Avengers\, because they are brave and help save the world. I think it would be cool to watch movies for work and write about them! She is just a normal 17 year old\, no matter everything weighed down on her shoulders! She also is a Los Angeles Times High School Reporter! To top it all off\, when she went to the press release of Moana she rapped a question to Lin-Manuel Miranda!! Talk about awesome! Cassandra Hsiao also goes to the Orange County School of the Arts\, and it is an amazing school to go to. Cassandra has a lot of jobs to fulfill! \n\n       Cassandra had so many great experiences at only 17 years old\, and I hope to be like her when I’m older\, being a movie critic. Having so many responsibilities must be difficult! Imagine balancing your job\, family\, friends\, school\, and college applications all on one plate! Although it is hard\, becoming a Scholastic Journalist\, and a Los Angeles Times High School Reporter would be amazing. Also\, Cassandra is so brave and confident when confronting the interviewee\, and her interviewers. I was always so nervous and anxious before meeting Cassandra\, so I always feel shy when with the interviewee(s). But\, after meeting Cassandra\, I hope I can become more like her and be confident when coming into interviews. Cassandra is a great role model for everyone\, showing that you can do anything at a young age\, as long as you work your hardest and try your best. She shows that someone can be tough and confident\, but still kind to others\, which is important as well. I worry that I am not confident enough\, and that others will laugh at me for my silliness\, but Cassandra has taught me that I should not be afraid and that I should have confidence with me wherever I may go.\n\n     In conclusion\, interviewing Cassandra was an amazing experience\, and I really hope that others can follow her footsteps and be kind\, but still confident in themselves and what they believe in. On January 21st\, 2017\, two La JaJa Kids Junior Journalists had the magical opportunity of visiting the glamorous amusement park\, Universal Studios Hollywood!\n\nWe arrived at the park to see a sea of people\, and the magnificent golden globe at the entrance. First\, we headed over to the Universal Plaza to go experience the lunar new year celebration put together in honor of Chinese new year. I met Curious George dressed in traditional Chinese clothing\, had Tigress and Po from the movie Kung Fu Panda teach me some Kung Fu\, and met the fearful Mandarin speaking Megatron. It's quite frightening when you meet Megatron. My favorite part about the celebration was the wishing trees. On a red sheet of paper\, you write down your wish for the new year and hang it on a wishing tree. Your wish is displayed on the tree for everyone else to see. Red is the color of Good Luck in Chinese culture.\n\nThen\, we went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and explored Hogsmeade. I am a huge Harry Potter fan\, or as we call it\, Potterhead. Out of the four Hogwarts houses (Wizarding School) I am in Gryffindor\, the brave house. The other houses are Ravenclaw\, the wise house\, Hufflepuff\, the loyal and friendly house\, and Slytherin house\, the cunning house that is known to have a bit of a nasty reputation.  I also experienced the delicious taste of butterbeer. But honestly\, I felt like I was holding an iceberg instead of the butterbeer. It was only about 55 degrees outside. I explored the rest of Hogsmeade and found chocolate frogs and every flavour beans at Honeydukes Sweets\, a wizard candy shop. I saw  some hysterical pranks at Zonko's Joke Shop\, saw Hogwarts uniform at Gladrags Wizardwear\, and tried out wands at Ollivanders. I even got to touch and use some famous wizards and witches wands\, such as Harry Potter\, Hermione Granger\, Ron Weasley\, Lord Voldemort\, Neville Longbottom\, Ginny Weasley\, Luna Lovegood\, and Bellatrix Lestrange to name a few. Sadly\, we didn't have enough time to get on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. But regardless\, I had the time of my life at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.\n\nAfter finishing up my delicious butterbeer at Hogsmeade\, Jaslyne and I went to the Lower Lot to get on Jurassic Park's River Adventure. The ride was stomach-wrenching. We saw replicas of great dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth. But the best part was the exhilarating 84 feet drop. It was a lot of fun\, until I got soaked completely with water at the end.\n\nAfter our literally breathtaking adventure on River Adventure\, we got to relax on the calming studio  tour. It was cold and windy\, but there was pure excitement in the air. I learned some pretty interesting facts about Universal Studios. It is one of the largest film companies. We passed some sound stages\, where things on TV were being filmed. I was in awe when I set my eyes on one of the most famous sets ever. I saw the clock tower from the classic 1985 movie trilogy\, Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox. Another thing I saw that amazed me was the bright red ferrari that was driven by famous actor Tom Selleck\, who starred in the hit 1980s show\, Magnum P.I. that ran on TV for Eight Seasons!\n\nThe last attraction we went on was the loved Simpson family ride. The Simpsons are a lovable family that live in Springfield. The television show has been running for 28 seasons and is still running to this day. The family consists of Homer\, the father of the Simpson family who is a lovable but careless buffoon who works as a safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant\, Marge\, the average American housewife\, their troublemaking son Bart\, their overachieving daughter Lisa\, and their baby Maggie. The story was that Krusty the Clown had created a new ride. The Simpsons will be the forat to ride it. But\, there's Sideshow Bob\, a guy who used to work for Krusty who plans on killing Krusty and the Simpson family. Grandpa Simpson and Maggie can't ride due to ride restrictions. Grandpa Simpson falls asleep and Maggie escapes into a nuclear reactor room\, which causes her to grow extra large. Then\, Sideshow Bob takes control of the ride and switches the mode from thrilling to killing. This is a stimulation ride. I loved this ride.\n\nMy experience at Universal Studios Hollywood was amazing. I had a blast at Universal Studios Hollywood. You can still go\, its not too late to get tickets to celebrate lunar new year at Universal Studios Hollywood!\n\n\n\nJaslyne (10)\n\nWhen I heard that Isabel and I were going to Universal Studios\, it was more than just a dream come true. It felt like I had just slid down a rainbow onto a unicorn’s backside then ridden to a magical waterfall. Universal Studios is my absolute most favorite theme park ever. Universal Studios is holding their annual Lunar New Year Celebration\, which Isabel and I had the privilege of attending. As this year is the Year of The Rooster\, we knew we were celebrating the Rooster zodiac animal. \n\n     At the park\, the Lunar New Year area was very festive and tremendously red. Everyone was chattering excitedly to each other\, and we felt very excited to be there. We walked around the area\, taking a picture with Po from Kung Fu Panda\, and writing down our wishes on red paper to put on the wish tree. Seeing famous television and movie stars dressed up in Chinese clothing looked so strange\, yet also looked fun! Suddenly\, we heard loud mechanical noises\, and suddenly a Mandarin Speaking TRANSFORMER was there! When we had the chance to talk to him\, we were frightened. He had sharp claws for hands and a low\, mean voice. We took a picture with him\, but we were petrified the whole time. All in all\, The Lunar New Year Celebration was a ton of fun! Then\, we went to explore the park.\n\n     We passed by many dressed up characters along the way. For example\, a New York Cop and a nice couple talking in their New York Street apartment. The actors were incredible! They sounded a lot like New Yorkers\, like they actually were born and raised there. (Which they actually might have been!) It was great talking to them\, and the props and setting really made me feel like I was in New York!! Afterwards\, it was Harry Potter time!! We drank Ice Cold Butterbeer and explored Honeydukes candy shop. The Butterbeer was tremendous\, and absolutely delish! Then\, we went on probably one of the most popular rides\, Jurassic Park. The ride was excellent\, not to mention more than a little wet! After the ride\, Isabel and I were soaked to the bone! But\, we had to go on the Studio Tour\, which made Universal Studios unique. On the Studio Tour\, it was very cold but still enjoyable. Did you know that they mix milk with water to make rain visible to the camera? Talk about disgusting. I would NEVER want to drink that. When the tour was over\, we were promised one more ride. We chose the Simpsons ride. Inside\, the ride was entertaining and\, very importantly\, warm. At the end of the ride\, Isabel and I were sad to go\, but we knew we had a great experience\, and it will always be in our memories. Universal Studios has a GREAT Lunar New Year Celebration\, and rides\, and I will definitely come again.  \n\n\n\n\n\n

These astonishing\, science-centric activities take place every day through Youth Science Center after-school programs\, held within California’s public school system.\n\nScience-Nerds in Training\n\nThe Youth Science Center (YSC) is a non-profit organization with a stated goal of improving science\, technology\, engineering and math\, or STEM education\, for students in California.  Operating since 1962\, the small non-profit is manned primarily by a dedicated corp of teachers and parents who donate their time as volunteers. Founded in Fullerton\, the group has recently found a new home at Bixby Elementary School in Long Beach\, California. Believing in the transformative power of STEM education\, YSC turns eye-rolling youngsters into awe-inspiring scientists\, poised to change the world and their futures\, one at a time.\n\n“We work within the school system\, providing after-school workshops and weekend classes to kids within a number of school districts\, including the Hacienda Unified School District\, Rowland Unified School District\, Whittier City School District and Mountain View\,” says Ron Chong\, the organization’s chair. “We are funding dependent but do our best to work with as many kids as we can\, both during the school year and the summer months\, when kids tend to fall behind in their studies.”\n\nThe Power of STEM\n\nRun by volunteers known as inquiry coaches\, YSC works to expose young students to a wide range of science-centric genres\, including physics and biology as well as engineering and math. The cutting-edge programs include Digital Star Lab\, a planetarium which covers the entire solar system\, comets\, stars and constellations; and the Legendary Stories Workshop\, which provides students an imagination forum within which to write their own\, personalized “Legend in the Stars.” The Youth Science Center is open year-round to the public and includes a wide range of hands-on\, learning-focused activities. Free of charge\, the Center is geared toward family exploration and group visits for classrooms. A free and extensive library of science books is also available for parents\, teachers and students to borrow and use.\n\nYSC provides students with a unique opportunity to delve deep into science via hands-on techniques\, able to fuel their curiosity and enhance their creative problem solving abilities. A strong focus on hi-tech learning is in keeping with college-level work\, yet is geared toward the interests and abilities of elementary school kids.
