Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 2:30 pm

Experience a multimedia performance where we dig into the past to uncover the mysteries of some of the extinct creatures who roamed Ice Age Los Angeles over 10,000 years ago. This dynamic, 15-minute show features a life-size adult Saber-toothed Cat puppet, a live performance and film projections that bring the distant past to life.

How the Cat Came to Life
=====================
More than 2,500 saber-toothed cats have been excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits and studied at the Page Museum. To bring the cat to life, NHM and Page staff collaborated with the innovators at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, whose film and TV credits include the Muppets and Where the Wild Things Are. The Page Museum’s Chief Curator Dr. John M. Harris, Collections Manager Emeritus Chris Shaw, and Assistant Lab Supervisor Trevor Valle, as well as NHM Curator of Terrestrial Mammals Dr. Xiaoming Wang, consulted on the project.

Start time: 10:00am
Length: 2-1/2 hours

The Union Station tour covers architecture, art, culture, and social history as it celebrates one of the great landmarks of Los Angeles, the 1939 Union Station.

The grand opening of Union Station was celebrated with a three-day extravaganza attended by nearly half a million people. The station’s monumental architecture, a unique combination of Spanish Colonial Revival and Art Deco styles, assured that it would be one of the most identifiable landmarks in the city.

It also turned out to be the last great railway station built in America, constructed as it was near the end of the heyday of rail travel. The vast and extraordinary spaces now serve as station to the city’s Metro Rail lines, and once again tens of thousands of people course through the building every day.

In the mid-1990s, an intermodal transit center and 28-story office tower was added on the east side of Union Station. These additions draw on the 1939 station for inspiration, interpreting the vast spaces and southwestern colors in a new way, and incorporating the work of many different artists as part of the public spaces.

Walking difficulty: Route covers about one mile total walking; no stairs or inclines

Wheelchair accessible: Yes

Cost: $10 general public, $5 Conservancy members (up to 2 admissions at Individual level; up to 4 admissions at all other levels), $5 children 12 and under

Note: If the Register button does not appear next to a date above, the tour has sold out.

You and your family will look and learn together as you participate in fun activities such as puzzles, drawing, role-playing, and even an artistic version of Mad Libs. Activities and works of art change frequently, making each visit a new experience.

10:00am

Los Angeles is like no other city. The Conservancy’s Walking Tour Program explores the history and heart of our amazing city through interpretation of L.A.’s unique architectural resources. Since 1980, the Los Angeles Conservancy has introduced countless Angelenos to the rich history and culture that downtown’s architecture has to offer.

Each Saturday morning, L.A. Conservancy will hold tours of downtown’s Union Station. The Union Station tour covers architecture, art, culture, and social history as it celebrates one of the great landmarks of Los Angeles, the 1939 Union Station.

Union Station is one of the most beloved landmarks in Los Angeles. Opened in 1939, the station was a gateway to the city. Thousands and thousands of people from other states poured through its gates every day to soak up the famous California sunshine.

The station’s architecture mixes the romance of Los Angeles’ Spanish and Mexican past with the geometric designs of the machine age. Brightly patterned tiles, smooth marble floors, grand arches, and 50-foot-high painted ceilings make the building a treasure trove of color, texture, and shape.

Union Station turned out to be the last of its kind. Train travel began to lose popularity in the 1940s, and no other grand stations were built in America.

After decades of decline, this marvelous building has come to life again as commuter hub for trains, light rail, and buses, and once again tens of thousands of people course through the building every day.

This hour-long tour explores the great Union Station through its beautiful shapes and colors, its relationship to the growth of Los Angeles, and its train history.
