SUMMARY:Fiesta de Muertos
DESCRIPTION:\n \nDia de los Muertos ~ Day of the Dead\nOctober 25 through November 3\n\n\n\nOlvera Street hosts its annual celebration of the festive Mexican holiday when families remember their ancestors and the continuity of life.\n\nFestival-goers can enjoy face painting\, entertainment\, community altars (ofrendas) (on display October 26 through November 2)\, and a nightly candlelight Novenario Procession (Parade of Living Muertos) at 7pm.\n\nSaturday and Sunday there is entertainment and face painting throughout the day\, from 10am-8pm; weekdays entertainment runs from 4pm-8pm. The ofrendas are on display all week. Teatro del Barrio presents La Danza de la Muerte nightly at 6pm.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor over 30 years\, the merchants on Olvera Street have celebrated Dia de los Muertos. The celebration has evolved to incorporate the pre-Columbian\, Aztec\, Mayan and Catholic rituals surrounding death. Each night\, a vibrant and colorful procession sets the stage for our ceremony.\nDia de los Muertos is\, in fact\, a celebration of life – it is not a time to mourn our loved ones\, rather it is a time to remember the lives they lead and the many things they enjoyed during that life. Death is a part of life\, and so we honor it. Dia de los Muertos at Olvera Street is the only celebration of its kind in Los Angeles – A nine (9) day festival\, with altars on display\, children’s workshops\, face painting\, and entertainment throughout.\n\n

SUMMARY:Annual Noche de Altares
DESCRIPTION:\n12:00pm to 9:00pm\n\nSince 2002\, El Centro Cultural de Mexico has been organizing Noche de Altares\, or a Night of Altars\, a community based Día de los Muertos celebration\, where families\, students\, community organization and businesses come together to create an authentic cultural experience that reflects Mexican tradition and what makes up our communities today. Organized by volunteers\, the purpose of the celebration is to honor the ancient traditions of the festival and bring community members together through art\, culture\, and compassion.\n\nFor one night\, families\, students\, community organizations\, activists\, artists\, and businesses are invited to build an altar in memory of a deceased loved one or to bring awareness to a social issue. By making altars\, participants are inviting fellow community members into their own life and passions for a loved one. Over the years we have seen altars bring strangers together through mutual compassion\, understanding and dialogue. Families reunite to remember and honor their loved ones.In addition to viewing beautifully created altars\, attendees will be entertained by cultural performances and live music. Children can get their face painted and participate in free\, art workshops. Local artists will be selling their wares and local restaurants will be selling their most delicious dishes. Finally\, attendees will have a photo opportunities with La Catrina\, the modern-day icon of Día de los Muertos created by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada.
