SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever
DESCRIPTION:For our 19th Annual Dia de los Muertos\, we honor the Aztec goddess who gave birth to the moon\, stars\, and the sun. Join us as we celebrate the divine feminine\, the loving mother that unites us all! Coatlicue (/kwɑːtˈliːkweɪ/) “skirt of snakes” “mother of the gods”\, is the Mexica-Aztec goddess who gave birth to the moon\, stars\, and Huitzilopochtli\, the god of the sun and war. She is the the Great Mother\, in whom both the womb and the grave co-exist.\n\nHer most famous monumental representation was at the Temple Mejor in Mexico City. After the Spanish Conquest\, the temple was destroyed and her statue was buried because it was considered an inappropriate pagan idol by Spanish invaders. After languishing in obscurity for more than 200 years\, She was rediscovered in 1790.\n\nNot long after she was found\, however\, Coatlicue was reburied — she was considered frightening and pagan. Eventually\, she was uncovered again in the twentieth century\, becoming one of the crowning objects of the National Anthropology Museum and Mexican/Aztec identity.\n\n“The post-conquest history of the statue of Coatlicue is connected to the ideology of Mexican nationalism\, to the history of aesthetics\, to surrealism and to Chicano feminism. It has been an object of horror\, extolled as a thing of beauty hidden from view\, exhibited as a masterpiece\, and is the subject of endless speculation” – Jean Franco\n\nWe summon and celebrate the lost Mother Goddess of the Americas to pay tribute to Feminine Power and Divinity. She will not be silenced. She will not remain buried and forgotten. She is the Mother who creates us and the Earth who welcomes us upon Death. The irrepressible and indestructible Coatlicue rises again to inspire and guide Dia de Los Muertos 2018.\n\nCoatlicue: Mother of the Gods. Interview with Dr. Manuel Aguilar\, Art History Professor at Cal State LA.Click Here to watch interview.\n\nSaturday\, October 27th\, 2018: NOON until MIDNIGHT\n\nThe Ceremonial Altar Set-Up: Friday\, October 26th\, 2018 – 3pm onward

SUMMARY:Pageant of the Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Just when you thought it was safe to go backstage the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters brings a monster of a good time back to Laguna Beach!\nOnly returning to the Festival grounds every five years\, the Pageant of the Monsters will offer attendees a frightfully fun time with ghoulish tricks and treats October 26\, 27\, 28 and 31\, 2018.\n\nResurrecting an event from years past\, the Pageant’s backstage will transform into a haunted house with an artistic twist. Themed Raiders of the Lost Art\, join “Cincinnati Smith” on a treasure “haunt” through the workshop labyrinths and behind-the-scenes catacombs. The Festival of Arts grounds will be filled with halloween-themed art activities\, music\, and other “spook-tacular” surprises.\n\nThis event is not recommended for children under 5 years of age. Funds for this event are provided in part by the lodging establishments and the City of Laguna Beach.

SUMMARY:Free Drive-Thru Vaccination Clinic
DESCRIPTION:The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services\, in partnership with a number of City departments and local organizations\, will host a large-scale Flu Vaccination Clinic on October 27\, 2018\, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at Veterans Memorial Stadium\, located at 5000 E. Lew Davis Street.\n\nLast year was a particularly severe flu season\, with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimating that more than 900\,000 people were hospitalized and more than 80\,000 people died from the flu last season. These numbers emphasize the seriousness and severity of flu illness and serve as a strong reminder of the importance of flu vaccination. Flu vaccination has not only been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness\, but also to reduce the risk of serious flu outcomes that may result in hospitalization and even death.\n\nThe Flu Vaccination Clinic on October 27 will be the largest flu vaccination clinic in Long Beach since the H1N1 pandemic in 2009\, and attendees will have the option of receiving their vaccines without even exiting their cars!\n\nAnyone 12 years and older can receive the vaccine in a drive-thru. Families with children under 12 years old will be directed to a walk-up area to receive their vaccines.

SUMMARY:Scare-amount Ranch
DESCRIPTION:For nearly 100 years\, Paramount Ranch has set the scene for hundreds of movies\, TV shows\, and photo shoots. That includes a number of monster\, paranormal\, and other supernatural films and shows\, from “The Forbidden Trail” (1932) to “Van Helsing” (2004)\, and episodes of the X-Files and HBO’s Westworld. In keeping with that theme\, the National Park Service will host a one-of-a-kind event on Saturday\, October 27\, called Scare-amount Ranch.\n\nThe family-friendly Halloween event will combine elements of film history and nature. Kids activities will include making fake movie blood and nocturnal animal-themed crafts. Groups can choose from two self-guided hikes into the backlot woods\, one which will be family-friendly\, the other for those looking for a little scare.\n\nOther activities will include a screening of the 1940 classic Dr. Cyclops\, which was shot at Paramount Ranch; costume contest\, face painting\, selfies in the jailhouse; a spider zoo; and ranger stations throughout the ranch grounds.\n\nThe free event with complimentary parking takes place from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Flashlights and a jacket are recommended.
